TACO BISCUIT BAKE

I am sure everybody has a few dinner recipes that you can always count on. You know the ones I am talking about? Where the kids will actually eat it! Easy prep and minimal ingredients.

This taco biscuit bake is one of my tried & true dinner recipes along with this creamy beef noodle bake, these shortcut easy chicken flautas and this super easy & creamy 20 minute garlic parmesan pasta

Taco biscuit bake is an easy & simple dinner recipe with refrigerated biscuit dough smothered in a beefy taco mixture and topped with melted cheese.

My favorite part of this taco biscuit bake are those soft buttery biscuit pieces. No matter how many “fancy” foods I try or how bad someone says those biscuits are for you, I will always love those flaky biscuits.

I find myself, and my kids, picking through this just to find those soft pieces of biscuit.

HOW TO MAKE TACO BISCUIT BAKE WITH REFRIGERATED BISCUIT DOUGH

Ground Beef – I always cook with lean ground beef (93/7) but feel free to use whatever you prefer as you’ll be draining the meat anyways.

Flaky Buttermilk Biscuits – This is the larger roll that comes with 8 biscuits inside. I always get the flaky kind but any of them will work just fine in this recipe. Just make sure the can size is the same as what is called for.

Condensed Tomato Soup

Taco Seasoning – I always use a packet of mild taco seasoning but feel free to use whichever one you prefer.

Water

Shredded Cheese – Any cheese you love will work great in this recipe. For some heat use shredded Pepper Jack cheese. I always stick with Colby Jack cheese.

Taco Toppings – The best part! I serve this with shredded lettuce, sour cream, and chopped tomatoes. There are so many different taco topping options so serve with what you love. Black olives, chopped cilantro, jalapeños, salsa, guacamole, avocado slices are some good ones.

MY TIPS FOR THIS DINNER RECIPE

– An easy way to get kids excited about dinner is to have something that they can do on their own to prepare their plate of food. I always lay out the toppings in bowls on the table and then everyone can top their taco biscuits with whatever they choose.

– This is not a spicy dish as I am cooking for 4 kids. If you want spice and heat then it’s very easy to adapt. Add some cayenne pepper in with the taco seasoning. Use a packet of hot taco seasoning. Add a can of diced green chilies. Top with slices of jalapeno peppers.

– Lots of people who have made this have added a can of drained and rinsed beans in with the biscuits. You could also add a can of drained corn.

Taco Biscuit Bake is an easy & simple dinner recipe with puffed up refrigerated biscuits smothered in a beefy taco mixture and topped with shredded cheese. Customize with your favorite taco toppings for a dinner that the entire family will love.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 can (10.75 oz) condensed tomato soup
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tube (16.3 oz) refrigerated Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits
  • 2 cups shredded cheese

Taco Toppings

  • shredded lettuce
  • diced tomato
  • avocado
  • sour cream

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Prepare a 9x13 baking dish and spray with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a skillet pan, over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until no longer pink. Break up the meat into crumbles as you cook it. Drain any grease.
  • Add tomato soup, water, and taco seasoning into the ground beef. Stir together and let it simmer for about 5-10 minutes so the flavors can come together and it can thicken slightly.
  • While meat is simmering chop each biscuit piece (8 biscuits total in can) into 8 small pieces. Add all biscuit pieces into the beef mixture and stir together to combine.
  • Dump into the prepare 9x13 baking dish. Cook for 20 minutes. Meat mixture will be bubbly and the biscuits will be a light golden brown.
  • Sprinkle the cheese on top and cook for an additional few minutes until cheese is melted.
  • Let the pan cool for 5 minutes to let the extra liquid thicken up. Serve with your favorite taco toppings.

Notes

To cut each biscuit in 8 pieces: cut biscuit in half and then cut each of the halves into 4 pieces. You will have 8 pieces total when done.
Use any cheese you want. I always use Colby-Jack cheese because that is our favorite.

  1. Looks super easy and delicious! Taco seasoning works wonders!

    1. Together As Family says:

It is really easy. SO easy that I remember thinking, when I made this for the first time, that it would have no flavor. That’s not true at all! Thanks so much for visiting Julia and commenting. I love hearing from readers 🙂

  2. I thought this sounded really good and I cooked it tonight. I never follow a recipe 100% so I added a can of chili beans and a few spoonfulls of my homemade salsa to it and it was sooo good! My whole family loved it and I plan on giving it to my daughter-in-law as well.
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!

Hi Sarah! I’m so happy to hear you loved it. I think your idea of adding chili beans sounds so good. I actually think I might try that next time I make this 🙂 Thanks so much for coming by and leaving a comment. Have a great weekend.

  3. You don’t list the bake temperature so I’m just assuming 350 degrees cause that’s what’s on the biscuit can. They’re in the oven now. My 5 year old had a grand time helping me add the biscuit chunks to the pan. I think the kids are going to love this meal. I added onion to the hamburger and some salsa to the meat mixture. My husband snuck it in.

    1. Together As Family says:

Hi Kristin! Thanks so much for noticing that. I will go correct that right now. It actually cooks at 375 degrees. I feel so bad…. I hope it turned out ok. I love your idea to add onion and salsa. So yummy! Thanks so much for commenting and visiting 🙂

      1. I want to make this , but my family doesn’t prefer taco seasoning packs . Whenever we make tacos we just season the meat . Would this recipe work out if I just season the meat like we do for tacos ?

        1. Together as Family says:

I totally understand! Yes the recipe would still work out- you could even try making your own taco seasoning mix. You can find the instructions online.

  4. I wonder if this recipe can be used with a Crock-Pot? Thanks! Looks delicious!

    1. Together As Family says:

I don’t think it would work in the crock pot. Does not seem like there would be enough liquid to prevent everything from drying out badly. It’s only a 30 minute meal so it’s fairly easy to put together at the end of the day. I usually make this for dinner when we have a busy weeknight because it’s so easy. Let me know if you try it in the crock pot 🙂

    2. I added corn, black beans and salsa (skipping the tomato soup) while adding ranch and taco meat to the meat.

  5. Dianne Ellis says:

Looks delicious! I’m going to put my spin on it and serve for Sunday brunch, topped with an egg or two. This would also be good with chorizo in place of the ground beef. 🙂

    1. Together As Family says:

I’ve never had chorizo but I bet it would be delicious in this with the egg. Yum! Great idea.

  6. Could u substitute the tomaoe soup for enchilada sauce.

    1. Together As Family says:

Yes you could. I believe the cans are the same size so that would work fine.

  7. I would love to use ground pork…would that be to greasy for this dish??

    1. Together As Family says:

I think you would be fine using ground pork. It is a greasy meat so just be sure to drain it well and maybe blot it with a paper towel to try and get some of that grease off. But, yes it should work just fine.

  8. Would it taste bad with buttermilk biscuits instead? I only have a 7.5 oz of the homestyle at home and don’t wanna go to the store

    1. Together As Family says:

Buttermilk biscuits would be just fine. I’ve actually used them in this recipe before. I grabbed the wrong one at the store!

  9. Seriously obsessed with this!! This is my second time in 2 weeks making it LOL. Even my picky 2 year old loves it!!!!
Only thing I did differently was add black beans. YUM!

    1. Together As Family says:

I LOVE hearing this! I am the same way, when my kids love something I will make it all the time 🙂

  10. Would it be ok to use tomato sauce or paste or diced tomatoes instead of tomato soup?

    1. Together As Family says:

You could do that but the flavor might be a bit different. Tomato sauce does not have much flavor by itself compared to the tomato soup. Same with diced tomatoes. It’s always worth a try to see if you’ll like it. I have only ever made the recipe as it’s written so I am sorry I can’t say for sure.

  11. Do I double the recipe if I use 2lbs of hamburger?

    1. Together As Family says:

I would double everything but the biscuits and cheese.

I made this the other night, and absolutely loved it!! I added a small onion chopped up, and about 1/4C. of salsa to it. I didn’t have any taco seasoning, but had Fajita seasoning so I used that. When I cut up all the biscuits, I thought it was going to be way too many, but it came out perfect! This is definitely one recipe that I will make again and again! Thank you for sharing this recipe!

    1. Together As Family says:

You’re welcome! I love your additions of onion and salsa. So yummy.

  13. Hi! This looks delicious but I am allergic to tomatoes…any recommendations of what I could put in it besides tomato soup?? Thanks!

It’s a great recipe but I followed the cook time and the biscuits were undercooked. But the top was brown. Trying to figure out the cook time.

    1. Together As Family says:

The only thing I can think of is maybe the biscuits were not cut small enough? If they are cut small, they should cook in that amount of time without burning the top and being raw on the bottom. So sorry! Hopefully that helps a litte.

  16. Michelle Hughes says:

Great recipe. I cut my biscuit up into very small bites since I used the ground and worked great.

    1. Michelle Hughes says:

      Ground = Grands LOL

  17. Amber Deaton says:

Hi! I’d like to try this recipe using what I currently have in the crock pot, which is shredded chicken with a packet of taco seasoning and 16 oz of salsa. Would this work alone for the juice portion, or should I still add the tomato soup? Maybe half a can of the soup? Thanks!!

    1. Together As Family says:

Sorry I can’t help more but I really have no idea how you would convert the crock pot chicken to this taco biscuit bake. You could always experiment and see how it turns out 🙂

  18. Would like to add some vegetables. Any suggestions?

    1. Together As Family says:

I think you could add anything you wanted. Maybe chopped up bell peppers or an onion. I think whatever you like you could probably add just fine.

  19. 5 stars
So. Good! I added corn and spicy black beans. I also didn’t have tomato soup so I put in some heavy cream and ketchup. It was delicious!

  20. 5 stars
This was fantastic! I have 3 picky eaters in my house, so cooking is always a drag. My husband and 8 year old wanted seconds. And my 6 year old ate his entire plate. I did add a can of rinsed chili beans and a 1/4 cup of jarred salsa to give something extra as did another reviewer. Thank you for a fabulous recipe!!

    1. Together As Family says:

Yummy. I love chili beans. What a fabulous addition. Thanks for your comment and for rating the recipe.

  21. Julia Cain-Lafleur says:

How do you make this more low sodium? I Think my mother in law would like it but she’s on a low sodium diet.

    1. Together As Family says:

My best tip for low sodium is just to use a low-sodium version of each ingredient. I believe most of the ingredients will have a low-sodium version in the store like taco seasoning, tomato soup, and the biscuits.

  22. 5 stars
Awesome! I added all suggestions since I used 2 lb beef, I had a red onion on hand (I never brown gb without an onion), added only 1 can tomato bisque soup, 1 can dark red kidney beans, 1 can (drained) white shoepeg corn into mixture, then topped with crushed Doritos taco flavor chips over cheese before baking. It was amazing! My kids agree!! I added a little crushed red pepper to the top on half for the adults too.

    1. Together As Family says:

Oh yum! Those Doritos on top sound amazing. Love the additions you made. They sound fabulous. Thanks for your comment and tips.

  23. 5 stars
Very tasty! I used ground turkey and added onion, red bell pepper, zucchini, and garlic.

  24. Can you prep this ahead of time and refrigerate it for a day?

    1. Together As Family says:

I think it could yes. I have never done it but I see no reason why that should not work. It may need to bake for more time (like 5 minutes..) because everything will be cold so just watch the baking time and check to see how it’s doing. Or you could let it sit out at room temperature for a bit so it’s not as cold when you put it in the oven.

  25. 4 stars
I made it for my first time today and it was super good! The only issue I had was after cutting the biscuits and adding them to meat, they all got stuck together and it was hard to mix. I had to keep breaking the biscuits up. Next time I think I’ll add them to the meat mixture individually. It was good and easy, though.

    1. Lucy Pulsipher says:

That’s a good note about the biscuits, thank you for sharing! I’m glad you liked the flavor and ease of the recipe, thank you for the review and comment.

  26. Carol Hall says:

I want to make this tonight and I was wondering, how do you think refried beans would work out being mixed with the burger ?

    1. Together as Family says:

Sorry I’m just seeing this! I think refried beans would work, probably just more mixing would be needed to make sure the ingredients are all incorporated. Let me know how it turns out!

  27. Carol Hall says:

I cut the biscuits really small and their still doughy on the underside. What did I do wrong ?

    1. Together as Family says:

Did you lay the biscuit pieces on top or stir them in with the beef mixture? For this recipe the biscuits are added directly to the dish versus being a type of ‘crust’ on top.

  28. 3 stars
flavor was spot on but the biscuits didn’t cook through. I cut each biscuit into 8 pieces like it said but they were definitely not cooked enough. I will make again but maybe with potatoes instead of the biscuits

    1. Together as Family says:

I’m sorry that happened! My guess is that maybe your oven bakes differently than mine. I would suggest trying to bake it a little longer and maybe even adding tin foil on top to hold in some heat. Let me know if that helps if you try to make it a second time!
