Peach Dump Cake Recipe

This peach dump cake is one of the easiest desserts to make! Just like the name, a dump cake is a recipe that you can just dump into one pan and bake, which makes it a simple enough recipe that anyone can make it.

I am not opposed to cake mix. In fact, when you doctor it up and add some juicy peaches, cinnamon, and butter it transforms the cake mix into this delicious cobbler like dessert that no one would ever guess was ready for the oven in just a few minutes.

Add a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top and you just might go for seconds.

A pan of dump cake with a scoop inside of it.

What You’ll Need

This dump cake only needs 4 ingredients! All the ingredients have a long shelf life so this is definitely one of those desserts that you can always whip up when you need something quick and easy.

  • Canned Peaches – You need 2 cans of sliced peaches. No need to drain the juices as we want the entire can dumped into the pan.
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • French Vanilla Cake Mix – I think the French vanilla cake mix is the best one to use. But of course, any cake mix will work great like a white cake mix, golden butter cake mix, yellow cake mix, or a vanilla cake mix. Just make sure it is the size called for, which is 15.25 ounces.
  • Butter – I use salted butter in this recipe. Cut the stick of butter into really thin slices so you will have enough to cover the entire top of the cake mix.

How To Make Easy Peach Dump Cake

Making this peach dump cake is so easy with only one 9×13 baking pan. That’s all!

Dump Peaches : Pour the canned peaches, juice and all, into the baking pan. Spread out the peaches so they cover the dish.

Cinnamon : Sprinkle ground cinnamon over the peaches.

Cake Mix : Sprinkle the dry cake mix over top the peaches. Use your clean fingers or a spoon to even out the cake mix.

Butter : Slice the butter stick into lots of very thin slices. Enough to cover the top of the cake mix.

Bake & Serve : Cook for 40 minutes. Let rest for about 10 minutes so it can come together and cool down a bit. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tips For Success

Here are a few of my tips for this recipe.

  • Don’t Prepare The Cake Mix : Do not prepare the cake mix according to package instructions. All you do is dump the dry cake mix over top the peaches and spread it out.
  • Slice The Butter Thin : This is the one thing I tell people with this recipe. Do not slice the butter into only a few thick slices. Take your time, slice it very thin so you have plenty of butter slices to cover the cake mix. Lots of people complain about the dry cake mix with a dump cake, but the key to avoid that, is to cut the butter thin so you have enough to cover the cake mix with it.
  • Don’t Drain The Peaches : No need to drain the juice. We want that juice to soak up the cake mix and create this cobbler like topping.
  • Use Salted Butter : You want the extra salt to help balance out the sweet cake mix and peaches.

Variation Ideas

Don’t feel like this dump cake has to be made the same each time! There are plenty of ways to switch up if wanted.

  • Add More Seasoning : If you love cinnamon then add a bit more. If you love the warm spices like nutmeg or allspice then try adding just a pinch of it. Think apple pie spice and pumpkin pie spice warm flavors.
  • Cake Mix : I love the French vanilla cake mix but use anything you want. Excellent choices would be yellow cake mix, golden butter cake mix, white cake mix, or vanilla cake mix.
  • Ice Cream : Don’t skip this! It makes this dessert 100x better. Use a lower fat ice cream to reduce calories. There are many lower calorie options of ice cream out there, so use what you like.
  • Add Nuts : For a salty crunch add some chopped pecans or walnuts on top of the cake mix, and then add butter.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this peach dump cake with a scoop of ice cream. We love to use vanilla ice cream but anything will work.

There are lots of options for lower calorie ice cream, gelato, non dairy ice cream so pick what you love!

You can also serve it with freshly whipped cream.

How to Store Leftovers

Leftovers can be stored covered at room temperature or in the fridge, for 2-3 days.

If stored at room temperature, the cake mix cobbler topping gets really soft. Almost soggy. So if you are planning on keeping leftovers for at least a couple of days, then I would suggest storing them in the fridge to keep the cobbler topping from getting soft.

I like your ideas on making your cobbler. I would like to share 1 with you. I use a potato masher to evenly pat everything flat. Just the weight of the masher is plenty. When cobbler is nice and flat I pour the melted butter on top not in one spot, but all over till covered After a couple of times doing it this way it becomes a breeze.

Can’t wait to try this recipe. I’m making it tonight. Will update. I appreciate the easy read and some backstory on yourself. Very informative.

  3. I love easy, but I have a lot of peaches I need to use up, so I’m looking for a recipe I can use fresh peaches for. Any way this would work with fresh peaches?

    1. Together As Family says:

I am sure fresh would work just fine, but I’ve never done it so I can’t say for sure…. maybe add a bit of sugar and let them sit so they can create some sweet peach juice. Then add into the pan. You can always try searching on pinterest for a fresh peach crisp or cobbler recipe. I’ve seen lots out there that call for fresh. I hope that helps 🙂

    2. Hi, when I use fresh peaches I put them on the stove with a cup of sugar some vanilla extract and cinnamon with fourth cup of brown sugar then after it cooks down and makes the syrup then I follow the rest of the directions…hope this helps…

      1. How many fresh peaches are used?

This recipe has been a family favorite for over 40 years. My grandmother used a Butter pecan cake mix in her recipe and we called it the Nutty Peach Crisp dessert. Absolutely delicious. Thank you for sharing your version of this recipe.

Oh yum! That sounds so good with the butter pecan cake mix! I may just have to try it that way now 🙂

Can you use yellow cake mix

    1. Together As Family says:

      Yes you can 🙂

Really good when it first came out of the oven, but was very mushy the next day. Maybe I needed to bake it longer?

    1. Together As Family says:

It is best eaten the day it’s made, within a couple of hours actually. I will add that into the recipe notes…. I apologize I did not do that before. The wet peaches will definitely make the cake topping soggy as it sits out. Thanks for leaving your feedback.

      1. It would be difficult for just 2 people to eat in one day yet I want to try it! Hummm? Maybe better go with a canned pie mix possibly?

        1. Together As Family says:

That could work, I have never made it that way so I can’t say for sure.

        2. I know that comment is older but for other readers…it’s easy to make 1/2 the recipe with 1 can of peaches. I “eyeball” the cake mix for 1/2 but you could measure it out. (Save other 1/2 for the next time) I use an 8×8 dish but a deeper pie plate would work too. Takes a little less time to bake than full recipe.

        3. I would humbly suggest dumping it into multiple small baking dishes. Maybe even something you can freeze before you bake it oh, so it will be in fridge when you want it.

      2. Perhaps you can try putting it in the fridge and just heat it when you eat it!

      3. Just reheat it in the oven after storing it in the fridge. It crisps back up.

I am so excited I found this! My husband loves peach dump cake! thanks! Separately, I love your plate. Is there a pattern and maybe a manufacturer you can give me so I can also get some of those plates?

    1. Together As Family says:

This is actually a plate I got at Pier 1 Imports years ago. I actually don’t even have it anymore because it broke (I used it for props for food pictures) and I can’t find it anymore because Pier 1 is going out of business. So sorry!

      1. Do you have to use butter, looking for low-fat recipe.

        1. Together as Family says:

Honestly, I don’t know another way you could make this recipe without butter. I’m sorry!

      2. Pier 1 is still online and have lots of pretty white plates and more designs to choose from. We grew up with Pier 1 stores, sure hate they closed!

  9. So simple and absolutely delicious. Will again and again. I added pecans 20 minutes into the baking time. The French vanilla cake is what just makes it.

    1. Together As Family says:

Yes! I love the french vanilla cake in dump cake recipes. Tastes so much better for some reason.

    2. I’ve made this recipe several times. & it’s good, but wished the cake mix topping was crisp. Always comes out soggy

      1. Together As Family says:

Yea, unfortunately that is what these dump cake recipes, that have a dry cake mix on top, come out to be. If you want a crisp topping then I would suggest using a peach crisp recipe or peach crumble. I also have this recipe –> https://togetherasfamily.com/berry-crisp-dump-cake/ which includes a cake mix, but it’s mixed in with melted butter and oats so you get more of a crisp like topping.

This cobbler was the easiest to make and the best I’ve ever tasted! Hands down 10 stars

  14. I would like to make this recipe for someone, but I need to know if you can make it a day ahead of time? If so once you take it out of the oven and it cools off do you let it sit out overnight or should you refrigerate it and should they keep it refrigerated? Also how many days is good for after you make it?

    1. Together As Family says:

I would recommend not making this recipe the day before. The topping does get soggy as it sits out. You could try refrigerating if you really want to make it the day ahead, but I have never done that so I can’t say for sure. I do know that leftovers left out at room temperature do get soggy and not super appetizing. This dessert is best made right before serving.

  15. JAN HANSEN says:

If, ONE, puts this Peach Cobbler in the refrigerator—after it has been baked and cooled, then, it, is actually BETTER the next day!!!!!
Being in the fridge gives it a very crunchy, sweeeet crust—because; of, the butter! Eaten cold, is a very pleasant experience! Yum!

  16. 5 stars
I use this recipe but I use spice cake instead. Super yummy!!

    1. Together as Family says:

Love the idea of using spice cake!

  17. I treat a lot of diabetic patients at my endocrinology office so I made this with Splenda-sweetened canned peaches and Pilsbury Sugar-Free yellow cake mix. I also sprinkled top of the butter with Truvia “Brown Sugar” in addition to cinnamon. I topped it with homemade ice cream (sweetened with Monk Fruit), and it didn’t taste at all like a sugar-free treat!!

    1. Together as Family says:

Great ideas for making this a diabetic friendly dessert!

  18. Keep in refrigerator. I do with all dump cakes, it stays firm and not mushy

Easy & Simple EXACTLY What Looking for. I. Like that Cake Options Given at End. THANK YOU

    1. Together as Family says:

You’re welcome! So happy you love the recipe ❤️

  20. This had a good flavor but when I got to the middle the cake mix was still powder, I used the 1/2 cup butter and covered the top, not sure what went wrong we just ate edges

    1. Together as Family says:

I’m so sorry! That is the number one issue people have with dump cakes. My first suggestion would be to slice the butter very thin and lay the squares out to cover the entire top of the cake, this will ensure it melts down to absorb and cook all the cake mix.

  21. LOVE YOUR RECIPE says:

Fantastic! I definitely recommend using French vanilla cake mix, it adds that extra vanilla flavor you gotta have! I sprinkled a little more cinnamon on top after baking and while cooling. I will do this recipe again and again!

    1. Together as Family says:

So glad you like the recipe! Thank you!

  22. 5 stars
Very good. I made this with canned peaches in juice and like others did not seem to get crisp in the middle. Would making this with peaches in heavy syrup make a difference? Recipe does not specify which ones. Thanks.

    1. Together as Family says:

I’m not sure it would make a difference except give you a thicker syrup at the bottom of the cake. Let me know how it turns out for you if you make it with the different peaches!

  23. Looks good but, haven’t made it yet.

    1. Together as Family says:

Thank you! Let me know how you like it when you make it!

  24. Barb Abel says:

Can I use frozen peach slices versus canned peaches?

    1. Together as Family says:

I don’t think it would work super well just because you wouldn’t have the peach juice that comes in the can. If you wanted to try it though, thaw the peaches first and include the liquid in the recipe. Again, not sure how it would turn out since you could end up with mainly water after thawing.

  25. How do you store this cake?

    1. Together as Family says:

I store mine in the fridge and then warm up a piece to eat it.

Awesome. So happy to hear it! Thanks for your comment.

  29. I want to try this recipe but will it work in a slow cooker? I have previously made a cherry cobbler in the crock, pot.

    1. Together As Family says:

I don’t think this would turn out in the slow cooker. The cake mix topping would just stay soft and wet and never crisp up like it does in the oven. I recommend using the oven.
