I am so excited for today’s post! These happened on a whim, spur-of-the-moment thing. I *had to* go to Target yesterday (insert my husband rolling in eyes πŸ™‚ ) and I saw these red, white, & blue m&m’s and stuck two bags in my cart. Not sure why because I didn’t need them and had no plans for them.

As I was driving home it struck me that Memorial Day is coming and of course the 4th of July. I don’t know about you but I LOVE to bring festive food to gatherings or picnics for the Holidays. These sheet pan patriotic sugar cookie bars are as festive as you can get! Don’t let the picture fool you cause these really are so simple to make.

Mix up a simple sugar cookie dough and bake it. Once cooled make the frosting and separate the m&m’s into the colors. This is a great chore to have the kids do. Unless yours are like my kids and they eat way too many of them. More specifically they eat the red ones. Not sure why my kidsΒ liked the red ones so much, but I ended up not having very many which is why I didn’t do as many red lines of the flag.

I chose to decorate the flag vertically. You could also turn the pan horizontal and decorate the flag that way. Either way works. Like I mentioned, I would have done more red lines but my kids ate too many red ones and I was a bit short.

And yes, I realize that I mixed up the stars. They’re supposed to be white stars with theΒ blue behind them. I did blue stars with the white behind them. While decorating these I was attempting to answer some math questions for my son, getting my toddler another drink, and working around my other daughters painting set up she had on the kitchen counter. It was busy!

Make plans to have this dessert at your Memorial Day festivities or the Fourth of July! I know I will be making this again come July. And, you might even gain some “mom points” with your kids too. My son told me that I was “the best food artist” after he saw this πŸ™‚ Enjoy friends!

Ingredients

    sugar cookie bars
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • frosting
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 bags (11.4 oz each) red, white, & blue plain M&M's

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a cookie sheet (12"x17" or 13"x18") by spraying with cooking spray.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, or using a hand held mixer, cream butter and sugar until light & fluffy. This will take 2-3 minutes.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, mixing after each egg. Add vanilla and mix well.
  • In a separate bowl combine flour, salt, baking soda and stir with a whisk to combine. Add to the wet mixture and mix just until combined. Spread onto the greased baking sheet. To make this easier you may need to spray your hands with cooking spray to prevent the dough sticking to your hands.
  • Bake for 12-14 min, until edges look done but the center still looks "wet" and underdone slightly.
  • Cool completely.
  • For the frosting: mix butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add vanilla and almond extracts. Blend. Add powdered sugar in 1-2 cup increments until combined, then add milk a little at a time and mix until smooth and spreading consistency. Spread over cooled cookie bars.
  • Immediately after frosting, press the red, white, & blue candies into the frosting to resemble the American Flag.

Notes

Be careful to not overbake these. The edges should look done but not be brown at all. The middle will still look "wet" and underdone but as they cool they will set up nicely. If these are overcooked they will be really dry. The one time I cooked mine for 15 minutes they were dry and overdone. Mine are perfect at 13 minutes.
