Gumbo Soup Sloppy Joes

Gumbo Soup Sloppy Joes are a sweet & smokey mix of chicken gumbo soup, curry powder, ketchup, and brown sugar that cooks in one skillet pan. You won't believe how delicious these are and they're simple to make thanks to the canned gumbo soup and two types of ground meat; ground beef and ground turkey.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) Campbell's Condensed Gumbo Soup
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • In a skillet pan, over medium high heat, cook and crumble the ground beef, ground turkey, onion, and kosher salt until the meat is no longer pink. Drain any excess grease/liquid from the pan.
  • Stir in the condensed gumbo soup, ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, curry powder, and black pepper.
  • Bring the mixture to a slight boil and then reduce heat to medium-low. Let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until the mixture is thickened to your preference.
    * Don't cover the pan with a lid because we want the excess moisture to evaporate out during the simmer time, that way it will thicken up nicely.
  • Using a slotted serving spoon, serve a scoop inside hamburger buns (toasted buns spread with butter in the oven is so yummy) and enjoy!

Notes

How To Toast Hamburger Buns : Separate the hamburger buns and place them on a cookie sheet. Spread butter on each one and then broil on low heat for 2-4 minutes. Watch carefully because it can burn quickly on broil.
Serving Ideas : My family loves putting Lay's Lightly Salted potato chips inside sloppy joes. You can also add a slice of cheese if wanted.
Ground Meat : I use 96/4 ground beef and 93/7 ground turkey when I make this recipe. You can use any fat percentage you prefer because the excess grease will get drained off anyways. You can also substitute with ground chicken or even ground pork. I highly recommend using the two different kinds of ground meat, but if you want, feel free to use all ground beef or all ground turkey.
Simmer Time : It's important, for the flavor and texture, that you don't try to rush the simmer time. It should take 20-25 minutes, with random stirring, for the mixture to thicken up and the flavors to develop.
Gumbo Soup : DO NOT prepare this before adding it into the skillet pan. Just open the can and dump the contents inside, into the pan. Make sure you get the correct can of condensed soup. You will find it alongside the other condensed soups like tomato, cream of chicken, etc.
Serving Size : I can get 10 sloppy joes out of this recipe but that is with smaller portions of the meat inside each bun. Normal serving size of the meat inside the bun is 8 servings. With each serving being about 3/4 cup of meat mixture. The nutrition information is just an estimate and includes only the meat mixture and not the hamburger bun (as that will vary depending on which ones you use).
