Donut Cake Pops (or Donut Hole Truffles)

Let's make Donut Cake Pops! You can make donut cake pops or donut hole truffles, with just a few ingredients - old-fashioned donut holes, melting wafers, coconut oil, and sprinkles! Decorate with any type of sprinkles for any holiday or gathering.

Ingredients

  • 24 (6-inch) cake pop sticks (only if making cake pops)
  • 24 old-fashioned cake donut holes
  • 10-12 ounces melting wafers OR candy melts (any color)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • sprinkles

Instructions

  • Prep : Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper.
  • Add the melting wafers, or candy melts, and coconut oil into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second increments, stirring after each one, until completely melted and smooth .
    * Mine took 1½ minutes total with stirring every 30 seconds.
    * I recommend using a deeper glass cup so you have plenty of room to dip the donut cake pops into it. I use a 2-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup.
    * Read directions below in the notes if wanting to make donut hole truffles.
    10-12 ounces melting wafers OR candy melts, 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • Dip the end of the cake pop stick into the melted chooclate and then insert the stick 2/3 of the way into the donut hole. Place it on the prepared baking sheet.
    Repeat with the remaining donut holes and cake pop sticks.

  • Place the donut cake pops into the freezer for 5 minutes, or the fridge for 10 minutes, to set and chill.
  • Dip the donut cake pops into the melted chocolate. Swirl the cake pop in a circular pattern over the chocolate to allow the excess chocolate to drip off.
  • Immediately add sprinkles to the cake pop. Place the cake pop onto the baking sheet (lay it gently on it's side) OR into a cake pop stand.

  • Let the cake pops set at room temperature for 15-20 minutes until the chocolate is set and hardened.

Notes

Melting Chocolate : The melting wafers (Ghiradelli brand) come in a 10 ounce bag, and they come in white chocolate, milk chocolate, or dark chocolate. If you want a colored cake pop then I suggest using candy melts which come in a huge range of colors for different Holidays and occasions. The candy melts come in a 12 ounce bag. Either sized bag will work for making the 24 cake pops in this recipe. 
To Make Donut Hole Truffles : Omit the cake pop stick step (including the chill time). Instead, use a plastic fork with the middle ring removed. Place the donut hole into the melted chocolate and use the fork to pull it out, tap it against the cup to let the excess chocolate fall off, and then place it onto the baking sheet. Use a toothpick to help guide and nudge the truffle off of the fork and onto the baking sheet to set. Allow the truffles to set at room temperature for about 20 minutes OR you can place them in the fridge to set.
