Ingredients

Oreo Crust

  • 2 cups Oreo cookie crumbs (about 22 whole Oreos)
  • 5 tablespoons salted butter melted

Whipped Chocolate Pudding Filling

  • 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding
  • cups half and half
  • 1 cup Oreo cookie crumbs (about 11 whole Oreos)
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip thawed

Dirt Topping

  • 1/2 cup Oreo cookie crumbs (about 6 whole Oreos)
  • 8-10 gummy worms

Instructions

  • Make The Crust : Add the Oreo cookie crumbs and melted butter into a small mixing bowl. Stir together until all the cookie crumbs are coated and combined. It should resemble wet sand.
    * If using unsalted butter add ¼ teaspoon sea salt in with the cookie crumbs and melted butter.
2 cups Oreo cookie crumbs, 5 tablespoons salted butter
  • Firmly press the Oreo crust mixture into an ungreased 9-inch pie plate, on the bottom and up the sides. Place the pie plate in the freezer for 20 minutes.
  • Make The Whipped Chocolate Pudding Filling : In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry chocolate instant pudding mix and half and half milk. Whisk for 1-2 minutes until dissolved and it starts to thicken. Let the pudding sit for 5 minutes to thicken even more.
1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding, 1½ cups half and half
  • Stir in the Oreo cookie crumbs.
    1 cup Oreo cookie crumbs
  • Stir in the Cool Whip.
    8 ounces Cool Whip
  • Evenly spread the filling into the Oreo crust. Cover the pie plate with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.
    * You can refrigerate up to overnight. I think a chill time of 6-8 hours is preferred.
  • Toppings : Right before serving, remove the pie from the fridge and sprinkle the Oreo cookie crumbs over top to create the 'dirt', and then place the gummy worms on top of the dirt or gently stick some worms into the dirt.
1/2 cup Oreo cookie crumbs, 8-10 gummy worms

Notes

How To Crush Oreos Into Cookie Crumbs? : I use a simple, small food chopper to do this (linked above in the recipe card). You can also use a food processor or place the Oreo cookies into a Ziploc bag and use a meat pounder or rolling pin to crush them until small. I recommend using a heavy-duty or freezer Ziploc bag to ensure that the heavy meat pounder does not break open the bag.
Chill Time : This pie needs a minimum of 4 hours in the fridge, but preferably closer to 6-8 hours or overnight is best.
Instant Pudding : Ensure you are using the instant pudding and not the cook n' serve pudding. They are very different and one will work properly (instant pudding) while the other one will end up a soupy mess. The instant pudding is the one where it just calls for milk to be added to it. The cook n' serve requires stove top cook time. We don't want that!
Super Easy Prep! : Try making this dirt pie using a prepared, store-bought Oreo crust or other crumb crust like a chocolate graham cracker crust.
Variations : Use any variety of Oreo cookie you want. Obviously, depending on the flavor used it will change the flavor of the pie slightly. Double-Stuf can be used, chocolate Oreos, or even mint Oreo cookies. I prefer using the classic Oreo cookies when making this recipe.
Homemade Whipped Cream : If you don't want to use Cool Whip you can make a stabilized homemade whipped cream recipe that includes gelatin in it (usually heavy whipping cream + gelatin + sugar) in order for the pie to set properly. I don't have a recipe I use but a simple Pinterest or Google search will bring up plenty of them.
