Dirt Pie Recipe (Easy No Bake Dessert)

This Oreo Dirt Pie is the most requested desert at my house – even as my kids have gotten older, this is still a favorite. I have to admit that even as an adult, I get excited about this pie!

Dirt dessert is essentially made to replicate dirt with Oreo cookie crumbs, chocolate pudding with Cool Whip, and then gummy worms are the finishing touch to the ‘dirt’.

What Is Dirt Pie Made Of?

Dirt Pie is an easy, no bake dessert that consists of layers of an Oreo cookie crust, instant chocolate pudding layer with cool whip, and then topped with the ‘dirt’ which is crushed Oreo cookies and gummy worms.

A oreo dirt dessert is a light, creamy, and fluffy layered dessert that is made to replicate dirt… using Oreo cookie crumbs, chocolate pudding, and then gummy worms add a nice touch of ‘worms in dirt’ look. Kids of all ages LOVE this dessert! It can be made as a pie, cake, or in individual cups.

Ingredients Needed

There are 3 easy parts to this recipe – the crust, filling, and topping. Each one has 4 ingredients or less and they’re all super easy to make.

Oreo Cookie Crust

  • Crushed Oreo Cookies – You need 2 cups of crushed Oreo cookie crumbs which is equal to about 22 whole Oreo cookies. I use regular Oreos for the crust (aka – not double stuf).
  • Melted Butter – Unsalted or salted can be used. If using unsalted butter, add 1/4 teaspoon salt to the crust mixture.

Whipped Chocolate Pudding Filling

  • Instant Chocolate Pudding – This is the smaller box of instant pudding mix (3.9 oz).
  • Half and Half – You want a higher fat milk to help the pudding thicken and set. I recommend half and half, but whole milk will also work.
  • Oreo Cookie Crumbs – Crush 11 Oreo cookies for this. They get mixed in with the Cool Whip and instant pudding filling.
  • Cool Whip

Dirt Topping

  • Oreo Cookie Crumbs – Crush 6 whole Oreos for this.
  • Gummy Worms

How To Make No Bake Dirt Pie (Step-by-Step Directions)

  • Make The Crust : Add the Oreo crumbs and melted butter into a small mixing bowl. Stir until well combined and it resembles wet sand. Firmly press the crust mixture into a 9-inch round pie plate (ungreased) on the bottom and up the sides. Place the crust in the freezer while you prepare the rest.
  • Make The Filling : Whisk together the milk and instant pudding mix until it’s thick and combined well. Let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken even more. Stir the crushed Oreos into the pudding and then stir in the Cool Whip until combined well.
  • Chill Time : Evenly spread the chocolate pudding mixture over top the Oreo crust. Cover the pie plate with plastic wrap or a lid and let it refrigerate for at least 4-6 hours before serving. Overnight works also!
  • Toppings & Serve! : Add the crushed Oreos on top of the dirt pie to resemble the ‘dirt’. Place 8-10 gummy worms on top of the dirt and you can even gently stick some worms into the dirt.

How To Store Leftover Dirt Pie

Store the leftover pie, inside the pie plate or remove slices to individual containers, in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The Oreo crust and dirt crumbs will soften as it sits in the fridge. Add some additional crushed Oreo cookies on top of the leftovers to add some texture (if wanted).

I recommend storing the leftovers inside the pie plate as the weight of the thick pudding layer can end up collapsing the crust if they’re stored in individual slices.

Oreo dirt pie does not freeze well and I don’t recommend freezing it.

Recipe Tips

  • Instant Pudding : Ensure you are using the instant pudding and not the cook n’ serve pudding. They are very different and one will work properly (instant pudding) while the other one will end up a soupy mess. The instant pudding is the one where it just calls for milk to be added to it. The cook n’ serve requires stove top cook time. We don’t want that!
  • Chill Time : Plan ahead and allow for at least 4 hours of chill time before adding the topping and serving. The pie needs to time to set, thicken, and for the flavors to meld together.
  • Super Easy Prep! : Try making this dirt pie using a prepared, store-bought Oreo crust or other crumb crust like a chocolate graham cracker crust.
  • Variations : Use any variety of Oreo cookie you want. Obviously, depending on the flavor used it will change the flavor of the pie slightly. Double-Stuf can be used, chocolate Oreos, or even mint Oreo cookies. I prefer using the classic Oreo cookies when making this recipe.
  • Homemade Whipped Cream : If you don’t want to use Cool Whip you can make a stabilized homemade whipped cream recipe that includes gelatin in it (usually heavy whipping cream + gelatin + sugar) in order for the pie to set properly. I don’t have a recipe I use but a simple Pinterest or Google search will bring up plenty of them.

1/2 cup Oreo cookie crumbs, 8-10 gummy worms

Notes

How To Crush Oreos Into Cookie Crumbs? : I use a simple, small food chopper to do this (linked above in the recipe card). You can also use a food processor or place the Oreo cookies into a Ziploc bag and use a meat pounder or rolling pin to crush them until small. I recommend using a heavy-duty or freezer Ziploc bag to ensure that the heavy meat pounder does not break open the bag.
Chill Time : This pie needs a minimum of 4 hours in the fridge, but preferably closer to 6-8 hours or overnight is best.
Instant Pudding : Ensure you are using the instant pudding and not the cook n’ serve pudding. They are very different and one will work properly (instant pudding) while the other one will end up a soupy mess. The instant pudding is the one where it just calls for milk to be added to it. The cook n’ serve requires stove top cook time. We don’t want that!
