Ingredients

Salisbury Steak Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Mushroom Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard

Instructions

  • Salisbury Steak Patties : In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix until thoroughly combined. Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal oblong shaped patties.
1 pound ground beef, 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs, 1 large egg, 1 tablespoon whole milk, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon ketchup, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • In a large skillet pan, over medium-high heat, cook the hamburger patties on each side until browned with a nice crust to them. Remove the patties from the skillet pan and transfer them to a plate.
    * No need to cook until a safe internal temperature, just get a nice sear on the outside of the patties on both sides.
  • Mushroom Gravy : Into the same skillet pan, add the butter, sliced mushrooms, and onions. Cook until the onions and have softened and the mushrooms have turned brown.
    * Remember to scrape up the pan drippings - all the browned bits off of the bottom of the skillet (lots of flavor there!).
3 tablespoons butter, 8 ounces sliced mushrooms, 1 small onion
  • Add in the flour and cook, while stirring constantly, until the mushrooms & onions are coated in the flour paste and it turns a golden brown color. About 1-2 minutes.
    3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Slowly stir in the beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the brown bits off of the bottom of the skillet pan.
3 cups beef broth, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • Simmer Salisbury Steak & Gravy : Reduce the heat to low-medium. Add the steaks back into the skillet pan and cook for an additional 10 minutes or until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 165℉ and the gravy has thickened.
  • Serve a patty over top some mashed potatoes and add a spoonful of the rich gravy mixture over top the cooked patties.

Notes

Serving Size : The recipe makes 4 large patties but I usually shape them into smaller sized patties so I can get 6 servings from the recipe. When's Erving them over mashed potatoes and with some sort of side dish (like veggies), everyone in my family is plenty full with the smaller sized patty.
Skillet Pan : Use a larger skillet pan (about 12 inches) for this recipe.
Ground Beef : The higher the fat content the more moist and flavorful the patties will be, but the sauce will also be more oily. I prefer using a leaner ground beef like 90/10 or 93/7 when making this recipe. After cooking the patties you can soak up some of the grease/oil inside the skillet pan to prevent an oily gravy. I use a paper towel to soak up the grease if needed.
