In a large skillet pan, over medium-high heat, cook the hamburger patties on each side until browned with a nice crust to them. No need to cook until a safe internal temperature. Remove the patties from the skillet pan and transfer them to a plate.

Make the delicious mushroom gravy. Into the same skillet pan, add the butter, sliced mushrooms, and onions. Cook until the onions and have softened and the mushrooms have turned brown. Remember to scrape up the pan drippings – all the browned bits off of the bottom of the skillet (lots of flavor there!).

Stir in the flour and cook, while stirring constantly, until the paste turns a golden brown color. About 2 minutes.

Slowly stir in the broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the brown bits off of the bottom of the skillet pan.

How To Store Leftovers

Store any leftovers inside an airtight container (with some gravy), inside the refrigerator, for up to 3-4 days. Reheat leftovers in a skillet pan until heated through or warm up individual servings inside the microwave.

Best Salisbury Steak Recipe FAQ’s

What Kind Of Meat Is Salisbury Steak Made Of?

Contrary to what the name says, Salisbury steak is actually not made of steak at all – but rather from ground beef. You can think of it sort of like a hamburger patty without the bun, or a pan-fried single serving of meatloaf, or rather meatball-like.

Can I Make This Recipe With Ground Turkey or Lean Ground Beef?

Yes you can use ground turkey instead of ground beef. A higher fat ground beef can be used or you can use a lower-fat ground beef instead – 80/20 would be the higher fat option while a lower fat option is 90/10 or 93/7. The meat patties will have more flavor and be more moist with the higher fat content but it will also leave the mushroom gravy a bit more oily.

What Is Salisbury Steak?

Salisbury steaks are like mini meatloaves covered in a rich mushroom brown gravy sauce. It’s typically a meat patty made from ground beef with some additional seasonings and mix-ins, similar to how you make meatloaf.

How Do I Serve Homemade Salisbury Steak?

Traditionally, you serve it over some creamy mashed potatoes. Try my Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes or these Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes or make dinnertime prep a breeze and use instant mashed potatoes from the grocery store. You can also eat it as is with some gravy spooned over top the meat patty, serve it on top of some white rice or even egg noodles.

Notes

Serving Size : The recipe makes 4 large patties but I usually shape them into smaller sized patties so I can get 6 servings from the recipe. When’s Erving them over mashed potatoes and with some sort of side dish (like veggies), everyone in my family is plenty full with the smaller sized patty.
Skillet Pan : Use a larger skillet pan (about 12 inches) for this recipe.
Ground Beef : The higher the fat content the more moist and flavorful the patties will be, but the sauce will also be more oily. I prefer using a leaner ground beef like 90/10 or 93/7 when making this recipe. After cooking the patties you can soak up some of the grease/oil inside the skillet pan to prevent an oily gravy. I use a paper towel to soak up the grease if needed.
