Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (I use 93/7)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • 1/3 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 brioche buns
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Melt the butter, in a skillet pan, over medium heat. Once melted add the ground beef and cook and crumble until no pink remains and the meat is lightly crispy browned. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
1 tablespoon butter, 1 pound lean ground beef
  • Sprinkle the garlic powder over the ground beef, stir well, and cook for 30 seconds until evenly distributed and fragrant.
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the ground beef, while stirring constantly, to coat the meat evenly. Cook and stir for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
    2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Add the condensed French onion soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, onion powder, dried thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir until smooth and fully combined.
1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup, 1/3 cup beef broth, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons ketchup, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon dried thyme, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sloppy joe mixture becomes glossy, saucy, and thick enough to mound slightly on the back of a spoon.
  • Use a slotted spoon to serve the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of a brioche bun. Place a slice of provolone cheese over top, and then add the top bun. Let the cheese melt slightly and thens serve warm. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Other sliced cheese options include gruyere cheese, mozzarella cheese, muenster cheese, or swiss cheese.
  • I love using toasted buns when serving sloppy joes because it prevents them from getting soggy and gives some toasty texture to the sandwiches. I spread softened butter on each half, place them onto a baking sheet, and then broil until toasted brown. If wanted, add a slice of cheese to each top bun (after they have been toasted) and let it melt.
  • If the filling is getting too thick while simmering, add just a splash of additional beef broth until it reaches the consistency you want.
  • Nutrition information is for one serving (about a heaping 1/3 cup) of the sloppy Joe mixture + 1 slice of provolone cheese. It does not include the bun as that will vary greatly depending on what bun is used.
