Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (I use 93/7)
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 3 garlic cloves (minced or pressed, chopped, paste)
  • 2 teaspoons hamburger seasoning
  • 1 cup bisquick
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • cups shredded medium cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, cook and crumble the ground beef and onions until softened and the meat is no longer pink. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
1 pound lean ground beef, 1 small onion
  • Stir in the garlic cloves and hamburger seasoning, and cook for 1 minute.
3 garlic cloves, 2 teaspoons hamburger seasoning
  • Transfer the ground beef mixture to the prepared pie plate and spread it into an even layer in the bottom.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, stir the bisquick, milk, and eggs until thoroughly combined. Pour the mixture over top the beef filling in the pie plate.
1 cup bisquick, 1 cup whole milk, 2 large eggs
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese over top.
1½ cups shredded medium cheddar cheese
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the pie is golden brown.
  • Let the hamburger pie set for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Drain the ground beef really well after cooking so the Bisquick topping sets properly, and the pie is not greasy.
  • To spice things up use shredded pepper jack cheese. Other great cheese options are mild, medium, or sharp cheddar cheese, white cheddar cheese, or colby jack cheese.
  • They do make gluten-free Bisquick mix but check the back of the box for the ingredient amounts, because it will probably call for 3 large eggs instead of 2 large eggs like this recipe calls for.
  • Instead of a round pie plate you could also use a 9x9-inch square baking dish instead. I like using the pie plate because then you cut it like a pie, and for some reason, my kids eat a 'slice of pie' better.
  • I like to serve the hamburger pie with cheeseburger type toppings such as ketchup, mustard, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, pickles. Or you can serve it with sour cream, or serve it as is with some extra cheese if wanted.
