Ingredients

Sautéed Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 green bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 1 sweet onion thinly sliced
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Steak

  • 1 tray (14 ounces) shaved steak
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Sliders

  • 12 King's Hawaiian Slider Rolls
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a large skillet pan (or large sauté pan), over medium-high heat, add the olive oil, sliced green bell pepper, sliced onion, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook until the vegetables are softened and slightly caramelized, stirring occasionally- about 10 minutes.
1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 green bell pepper, 1 sweet onion, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the thinly sliced shaved steak. Season the steak with the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook the steak until browned and cooked through - about 5-6 minutes.
1 tray (14 ounces) shaved steak, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Toss the steak with the vegetables to combine all the ingredients together in the skillet pan.
  • Cut the slider buns in half horizontally, making sure to keep the bottom as one whole piece and the top of the sliders in one whole piece. Place the bottom piece into a 9x13 baking pan (or something similar that will fit the sliders).

  • Spoon the onion and steak mixture over top the slider buns inside the baking pan. Evenly layer the provolone cheese over top the steak, and then sprinkle the mozzarella cheese on top. Cover with the top piece of slider buns.
6 slices provolone cheese, ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • In a small mixing bowl, stir together the melted butter, garlic powder, and dried parsley. Spread the melted butter mixture over top the slider buns using a pastry brush.
4 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • Cover the entire baking dish with aluminum foil and then bake for 10 minutes. If the cheese has not fully melted, remove the foil, and continue baking for an additional 3-5 minutes.
  • Serve the Philly cheese steak sliders immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Add Mayo or Cream Cheese : Adding a smear of mayo onto the slider buns is a really delicious way to add more creamy flavor to the sliders. You could also consider spreading some softened cream cheese onto the bottom of the sliders, and/or tops too, for a different flavor.
  • Fresh Sliced Mushrooms : Add some thinly sliced fresh mushroom in with the green pepper and onion mixture.
  • Shaved Steak : Shaved steak is the traditional choice for authentic philly cheesesteaks. Authentic cheesesteak is traditionally made with thinly sliced ribeye steak. Using shaved steak is convenient, and it maintains the dish's authenticity and replicates the classic texture and taste.  It is easy to find a 14 ounce of shaved steak at your local grocery store. I am not sure how else you could replicate the shaved steak, unless of course, you have a meat slicer/shaver in your kitchen. You could consider using thinly shaved/sliced roast beef from the deli meat counter as a substitute for the steak. Although it would not be quite the same and definitely not 'authentic'. If using roast beef I would highly recommend getting 1 pound shaved from the deli meat counter at the grocery store, rather than buying prepackaged lunch meat.
  • Double The Recipe : Are you feeding a crowd? This recipe doubles easily; simple double every ingredients and make sure to use 24 sliders buns. You will also need a bigger pan, such as rimmed baking sheet (12"x17" or similar) or a 10"x15" pan would probably fit the sliders as well.
  • Make It Cheesy : Adding cheez whiz is a classic way to make a philly cheesesteak even cheesier. I would either add it into the hot skillet pan with the steak and onion mixture, or spread it on the slider buns before adding the hot steak mixture.
  • Cheese : Mozzarella and provolone are the traditional cheese choices for philly cheesesteak, but another really good option that melts so smooth and perfectly, is white American cheese. Pepper Jack cheese is another option if you want some spice.
