So I stayed up way too late last night watching the most “scratch-your-head-give-yourself-a-headache-because-you- have-no-clue-what-they’re-talking-about” movies……. Interstellar.

The actors in it are some of my faves, but I literally went to bed with a migraine because the entire movie was so “out there” and just completely went over my head. I could not even tell you what it was about because I have no clue!

Anyone else seen the movie and loved it?

Anyways, onto to something that is worth the 2 seconds it takes to put together 🙂 DIY Homemade Taco Seasoning. I love buying spices in bulk at Costco or Sam’s Club because it’s so much cheaper and believe it or not I go through them. That entire jar! Whenever I buy it I always think to myself “there is no way I will ever use all this!” But sure enough, each time, I do and I find myself buying another one.

Plus, I can mix together this homemade taco seasoning and use it as needed when a recipe calls for a packet of taco seasoning. Yes, it takes a few extra minutes to whip up your own homemade taco seasoning, but I promise the taste is worth it.

I don’t know about you but I always find the packet seasonings have an odd taste to them. It doesn’t matter the brand but they all seem to have almost a ‘fake spice’ taste….. if that’s even a thing?!

I still always have a packet or two on hand. Because sometimes, opening a packet seems a lot easier than mixing up all the spices or opening a jar and measuring out this homemade seasoning. I am not against the packet as sometimes that is all I or anyone else has time for.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much better the homemade seasoning tastes. Only spices and nothing else! No MSG. No additives. NO weird ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Only 100% natural spices.

The recipe makes about 3 1/2 tablespoons of taco seasoning which is the equivalent of one store bought packet. Instead of adding the water I love to add chicken broth (if I am using ground chicken) or beef broth (if I am using ground beef or ground turkey). It adds just a hint of flavor and tastes better than the water.

If you want more of a tomato base then use tomato sauce in place of the chicken broth. That’s really good too. Double or triple the batch and then leave it in a container that seals tightly in your spice cupboard. I always put mine in a mason jar.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

To make ground meat for tacos

  • 1 lb ground meat (beef, turkey, or chicken)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chicken or beef broth

Instructions

  • Combine all spices and use in 1 lb of ground meat. Ground beef, ground turkey, or ground chicken. Recipe makes about the equivalent of a packet of taco seasoning from the store.
  • To make ground meat for tacos : Brown ground meat, in olive oil, in a skillet pan until no longer pink. Drain if necessary. Return skillet, to stove top, reduce heat to low, and add the seasonings and chicken or beef broth. Stir together and let simmer for a few minutes until most of the liquid is gone.

Notes

If you want spicy tacos then add 1/4 teaspoon (or more) cayenne pepper to the mixture.

You can use smoked paprika, instead of the paprika, for a smokier flavor if wanted. I use this most of the time and it's really good.

If I use ground beef or ground turkey then I also use beef broth as the liquid. If wanted, for a tomato base taco, use tomato sauce in place of the chicken broth.

I’d like to give this a try! How much do you use if a recipe calls for 1 packet of taco seasoning?
