Crispy Honey Garlic Chicken Recipe

These crispy pieces of honey garlic chicken are the perfect balance of flavor and texture with the oil fried crispy chicken chunks, and the combination of garlic and sticky and sweet honey sauce.

It’s a family favorite that we enjoy eating over cooked white rice for dinner.

Ingredients Needed

Crispy Chicken Ingredients

  1. Vegetable Oil : This is for pan frying the pieces of chicken. Depending on the size of pan you are using, you could need more oil in order to fry all the pieces.
  2. Large Eggs : Eggs are the ‘secret ingredient’ to a really crispy coating that actually stays on the chicken. The eggs bind the cornstarch mixture to the chicken pieces while frying.
  3. Cornstarch : This makes the crispy coating really light & fluffy.
  4. All-Purpose Flour
  5. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
  6. Sesame Seeds : This is an optional garnish but I highly recommend using them.

Sticky Honey Garlic Sauce Ingredients

  1. Honey
  2. Soy Sauce : You can use low-sodium light soy sauce or regular soy sauce, whichever you prefer.
  3. Garlic Cloves : Use fresh garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, or use garlic paste, for the best flavor. You can use chopped garlic from a jar, but I find that the fresh garlic or garlic paste taste better.
  4. Rice Wine Vinegar
  5. Fresh Ginger : To keep it simple use ginger paste. For fresh ginger, buy a knob of ginger and peel off the woody exterior skin, and then use a fine grater to grate the ginger.

How To Make Crispy Chicken With Honey Garlic Sticky Sauce (Printable Recipe Card)

In a medium saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, garlic, rice wine vinegar, and fresh ginger. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 3-5 minutes until the sauce has started to thicken. Set the sauce aside (off the heat).

In a large skillet pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.

In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs with a fork.

In another shallow dish, stir together the cornstarch and all-purpose flour.

Dip the chicken pieces into the egg, and then toss the chicken pieces in the cornstarch mixture until well coated.

Working in batches, transfer the chicken to the oil and cook until crispy and golden brown (about 5-7 minutes). Stirring occasionally to ensure that all sides get cooked evenly. Move the crispy chicken to a paper towel lined plate, and continue cooking the chicken in batches.

Toss the crispy chicken chunks with the sauce until all the chicken is coated well. Sprinkle the chicken with sesame seeds. Enjoy! My family loves this served over some cooked white rice.

How To Store Leftovers

Honey garlic crispy chicken bites should be stored, once cooled to room temperature, in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

  • To Reheat : Heat the oven to 350 degrees F and bake for 10-15 minutes or until heated through. You can microwave until heated through, or for crispier leftovers try using the air fryer to heat them until thoroughly heated.
  • To Freeze : Place the cooled chicken in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating in an oven-safe container.

What Are Some Substitutions I Can Make?

  • Chicken Breast : Use boneless, skinless chicken thighs for a juicer option.
  • Soy Sauce : Use Tamari or Coconut Aminos for a gluten-free option. You can also use light soy sauce (or reduced-sodium) or regular soy sauce, it just depends on the flavor you prefer and your salt preferences.
  • Vegetable Oil : Canola oil or peanut oil are other good options. Healthier options would also include grapeseed oil or avocado oil.

What Should I Serve With Honey Garlic Chicken?

  • Steamed Rice : Serve with white rice or brown rice.
  • Egg Rolls : Crispy egg rolls, frozen store-bought or homemade, are always a good option.
  • Roasted Vegetables : Roasted broccoli or roasted Brussels sprouts would pair nicely.
  • Green Salad : A fresh green salad with your favorite vinaigrette or creamy dressing goes really well with the crispy chicken bites.
  • Vegetable Side Dish : Fresh steamed green beans are an excellent choice, or your favorite vegetable.

Recipe FAQ’s

Can This Recipe Be Made Gluten-Free?

Yes, if you substitute the all-purpose flour for 1-to-1 gluten-free flour AND use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, it removes the gluten from the recipe.

How Can I Make The Dish Spicier?

You can add some red pepper chili flakes or cayenne pepper to the sauce mixture when heating it.

What If I Want Extra Sauce, Can I Double The Sauce Recipe?

Yes, absolutely! If you want lots of sauce then double the sauce recipe. I find that just increasing the amounts by half, will provide enough sauce with some leftover for drizzling. If you need more servings, and use 2 pounds of chicken breast, then you will for sure want to double the sauce ingredients.

Are There Options I Can Use In Place Of Vegetable Oil?

Yes, you can use canola oil, peanut oil, or avocado oil.

Notes

Soy Sauce & Salt : Because there is no additional salt on the chicken, I like using regular full-salt soy sauce. However, reduced-sodium lite soy sauce can be used but you may want to sprinkle some salt on the chicken chunks before dredging them in the flour and eggs. It really depends on your preference and the amount of salt flavor you want in the dish. I have also used half full salt soy sauce + half lite soy sauce (because I usually keep both in my fridge).
Want More Servings? : This recipe can easily be doubled! Double all the ingredients, and take note that you will have more batches of chicken to fry and you will need more oil.
Want More Sauce? : If you just want more sauce for the crispy chicken, like extra for serving and what not; I suggest .5 x the sauce ingredients and then reserve some for serving.
