Twinkie Ghosts (Fun Halloween Treat Recipe)

I have one more halloween recipe to squeeze in here! These super cute & festive Twinkie Ghosts are so fun to make with the kids or take them to a Halloween party or gathering.

Simple to make with Twinkies that are dusted in powdered sugar, and then candy eyeballs and black gel icing to create the eyes and open scared mouth.

Ingredients Needed

  • Twinkies – Just regular Twinkies is what you’ll need for these ghosts. I have seen other flavors like banana cream, so if you want to switch it up then try using a different flavor.
  • Powdered Sugar – This is what covers the Twinkie to create that white ghost look.
  • Black Gel Writing Icing – You will find this in the baking aisle by the frostings and other cake toppers. If you can’t find the writing gel try using black cookie icing. You just want something that has a small tip on it so you can easily create the small circle for the mouth.
  • Candy Eyeballs

Ingredients for this halloween recipe with each one labeled in text with what it is.

How To Make Twinkie Ghosts

Learn how to make this super festive halloween recipe with the easy steps below. Be sure and read to the bottom of the post where there is a printable recipe card, a pin it button so you can save it for later, and a recipe card with all the details and tips for success.

  • Twinkies : Use as many Twinkies as you want for this recipe. Remember that each one will get cut in half so you will get 2 ghosts per Twinkie. Cut each Twinkie in half, widthwise.
  • Mouth : Use the black writing gel or black cookie icing to create a circle for the mouth on each Twinkie half. You want to do this before the powdered sugar because the gel won’t stick to the powdered sugar (trust me, I’ve learned from experience!).
  • Powdered Sugar : Insert a fork or wooden kabob stick into the cream part of the Twinkie half. While holding the Twinkie with the fork, use a powdered sugar shaker or fine mesh strainer to completely cover the Twinkie until no yellow can be seen. It’s ok to cover the mouth up too. We’ll fix that later.
  • Eyes : Use a toothpick to trace a circle over the mouth to remove the powdered sugar that got on it. Use the black gel to place a dot of it on the back of each eyeball and press them gently into the powdered sugar covered Twinkie.

How To Store Leftovers

Store any leftovers in an airtight container, or covered on plastic wrap, at room temperature for 2-3 days. Be sure and not stack them as the powdered sugar can come off easily.

Substitution Ideas

There are a few changes you can make if you don’t have a certain ingredients or want to switch it up.

  • Black Gel : This is the ‘decorating gel’ in black that you can find in the baking aisle by the frostings and other cake toppings. If you can’t find it try using cookie icing in black or you can also use mini chocolate chips that you press into the Twinkie.
  • Candy Eyeballs : If you can’t find these then try using black writing gel for the eyes or mini chocolate chips.
  • Twinkies & Powdered Sugar : There really are no substitutes for this one! There are other varieties and flavors of Twinkies and those would work fine for the ghosts.

Recipe Tips

Here are a few of my helpful tips for this recipe so that you can have success recreating them in your own kitchen ♥

  • Powdered Sugar Tip : In order to get the most even layer of powdered sugar I recommend using a sifter or a powdered sugar shaker. If you don’t have those then try using a spoon to spoon it over the Twinkie, but that will create a thicker layer that is not as even.
  • Cut Widthwise : Make sure you are cutting the Twinkie widthwise so you end up with two halves that each have an end of the Twinkie on them.
  • Serving Size : The great thing about this recipe is you can make as many, or as little, as you need to. Each Twinkie makes 2 ghosts so use as many Twinkies as you need.
  • Mouth : Yes, you will draw the mouth on before the powdered sugar. It will get covered in powdered sugar and that’s ok. The gel won’t stick to the powdered sugar which is why we draw it on first. Swirl a toothpick in the circle pattern of the mouth until the powdered sugar is off of the black gel.

These Twinkie Ghosts are the cutest Halloween treat to make with your kids! Simple to make with twinkies, powdered sugar, black gel, and candy eyeballs. These festive little treats look great on a Halloween platter at a party or gathering and no one can ever resist them.

Ingredients

  • 10 Twinkies
  • black writing gel
  • powdered sugar
  • 20 small candy eyeballs

Instructions

  • Unwrap each Twinkie and cut each one in half, widthwise.
    * You will end up with 20 Twinkie ghosts
  • With the black writing gel, draw a circle where you'd like the mouth to be on each ghost.
  • Working one Twinkie at a time insert a fork, or a wooden skewer stick, into the cream part of the Twinkie. While holding the fork/skewer with one hand, use your other hand to shake powdered sugar over the Twinkie until it's completely covered and no yellow remains.
    * It's easiest to use a powdered sugar shaker or a dusting sifter wand. You can use a spoon to spoon it over the Twinkie, but the layer won't be as even looking.
    * It's ok if the mouth gets covered in powdered sugar, we'll fix that later.
  • Use a toothpick to trace along where the black gel is for the mouth. Keep swirling in a gentle circular motion until all the powdered sugar us removed from the mouth, while still leaving the hole in the middle of powdered sugar.
    * It's important to draw the mouth before powdered sugar, because the gel won't stick directly to the powdered sugar.
  • Use the black gel to put a little dot on the back of each eyeball and then gently press them onto the Twinkie ghost.
Repeat the process with the remaining ghosts.

Notes

Serving Size : A standard box at the grocery store contains 10 Twinkies, which is why the recipe calls for 10 of them. You can use as little or as many Twinkies as you need.
Eyes : If you can't find the candy eyeballs try using black gel to draw a dot for the eyes, you can also use black cookie icing which you can find at the store, or use mini chocolate chips.
Tips : If you can't find the black gel try another color like orange or green. It can really be any color!
Draw the circle for the mouth wide enough so it won't close in.
When tracing the black gel (mouth) with the toothpick, keep the same shape as it was in before. If you keep tracing in the circular shape of it, the powdered sugar will work it's way off.
