Ingredients Needed

  1. Butter : Adds richness to the meat for browning to replicate that buttery flavor in French onion soup.
  2. Ground Beef : I use lean ground beef (93/7).
  3. Garlic Powder
  4. All-Purpose Flour : This helps to thicken the sauce so it clings to the meat and stays on the bun. Prevents a soupy sloppy joe filling.
  5. Condensed French Onion Soup : This creates that classic French onion flavor with using sliced, fresh onions and cooking them down. I use the Campbell’s brand – Condensed French Onion Soup With Beef Stock.
  6. Beef Broth : Beef stock, beef bone broth, or the low-sodium versions can all be used. I prefer the Kettle & Fire brand of beef bone broth – the flavor is so amazing. I use it for any recipe that calls for beef broth.
  7. Worcestershire Sauce
  8. Ketchup
  9. Onion Powder
  10. Kosher Salt
  11. Dried Thyme
  12. Black Pepper
  13. Sliced Provolone Cheese & Brioche Buns : Any bun or hamburger bun can be used; I love the brioche bun because it’s a bit sturdier and has a sweeter, more buttery flavor which pairs well with the French onion flavors. You can find brioche buns in the bakery, or with the other hamburger buns in the bread aisle (this is where I find mine).

How To Make Ground Beef French Onion Sloppy Joes (Printable Recipe Card)

Melt the butter, in a skillet pan, over medium heat. Once melted add the ground beef and cook and crumble until no pink remains and the meat is lightly browned. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.

Sprinkle the garlic powder over the ground beef, stir well, and cook for 30 seconds until evenly distributed and fragrant.

Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the ground beef, while stirring constantly, to coat the meat evenly. Cook and stir for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

How To Store Leftovers & Reheat Leftover Sloppy Joe Meat

Store leftover French onion sloppy joe filling in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stove top, in a skillet pan, or microwave individual portions. When reheating, you will probably need to add a splash of water or beef broth to loosen the filling back up.

To freeze, place the cooled sloppy joe meat filling in a freezer-safe container or bag, and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

This recipe is great for making ahead if needed. Prepare the sloppy joe filling in advance, store it chilled in the fridge, then reheat right before serving. It’s also great for a party or gathering because it can be kept in a slow cooker on the warm setting for several hours.

Pro Tips From The Test Kitchen

  • Other sliced cheese options include gruyere cheese, mozzarella cheese, muenster cheese, or swiss cheese.
  • I love using toasted buns when serving sloppy joes because it prevents them from getting soggy and gives some toasty texture to the sandwiches. I spread softened butter on each half, place them onto a baking sheet, and then broil until toasted brown. If wanted, add a slice of cheese to each top bun (after they have been toasted) and let it melt.
  • If the filling is getting too thick while simmering, add just a splash of additional beef broth until it reaches the consistency you want.
