Chicken Alfredo Sloppy Joes are two of the best dinners in one sloppy joe recipe! Ground chicken and an easy homemade Alfredo sauce is all it takes for this delicious and easy dinner recipe.
My family loves sloppy joes – some of our other top favorites are Gumbo Soup Sloppy Joes, Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes, BBQ Turkey Sloppy Joes, and Hawaiian Sloppy Joes.
Chicken Alfredo Sloppy Joes Recipe
My family loves sloppy joes of any kind, and I love that this recipe uses ground chicken. Not only is ground chicken cheaper than ground beef, but it’s also a healthy and leaner protein source and it lends itself to take on any flavor perfectly.
Today’s sloppy Joe recipe starts with a ground chicken mixture and then you make an easy homemade Alfredo sauce in a separate pan – combine the two and you have creamy sloppy joes with ground chicken and Alfredo sauce.
Ingredients Needed
- Olive Oil : This is some fat for when you’re cooking the ground chicken because it’s such a lean ground meat. Any oil can be used, I use extra-virgin ‘light tasting’ olive oil.
- Sweet Onion : Any onion can be used (white onion or yellow onion), I just prefer the more mild and sweeter taste of a sweet onion. Make sure the onion is finely diced.
- Garlic : Use 3 fresh garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, use garlic paste, or use chopped garlic from a jar in the equivalent of 3 garlic cloves.
- Ground Chicken
- Italian Seasoning
- Kosher Salt & Black Pepper
- Butter
- Heavy Cream : This is the base of the Alfredo sauce and I don’t recommend trying to substitute with a lower fat milk; you need the fat to create a thick and creamy base for the Alfredo sauce.
- Grated Parmesan Cheese : You can use the ready-to-use grated parmesan cheese (in the shelf-stable can or refrigerated container) or for the best taste buy a wedge of parmesan cheese and shred it yourself.
- Garlic Powder
- Sliced Provolone Cheese : Sliced mozzarella cheese is another option or omit the cheese entirely.
- Buns
How To Make Ground Chicken Sloppy Joes With Alfredo Sauce (Printable Recipe Card)
In a large skillet pan, over medium heat, add the olive oil and finely chopped onion and saute until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3 minutes.
Stir in the garlic cloves and cook for 30 seconds.
Add the ground chicken, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook and crumble the ground chicken until it’s browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess liquid/grease from the pan.
In a separate small saucepan, over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the heavy cream, grated parmesan cheese, garlic powder. Continue cooking, while stirring constantly, for about 3-5 minutes or until the Alfredo sauce is thickened.
Pour the Alfredo sauce over top the cooked ground chicken mixture in the skillet pan. Stir thoroughly to ensure the chicken is evenly coated in the sauce.
Simmer for 10 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
Serve the creamy chicken alfredo sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom bun and add a slice of cheese (if using). Enjoy!
How To Store Leftovers
Any leftover chicken Alfredo sloppy joes can be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or a larger portion in a saucepan on the stove top. Add a splash of milk to the cream sauce if it has thickened too much during the fridge time.
Can I Make It Ahead Of Time?
You can prepare the Alfredo sauce and cook the ground chicken mixture ahead of time. Store them in separate containers, in the refrigerator, for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, combine the ground chicken mixture and Alfredo sauce inside a skillet pan, and heat together until combined well and thickened.
Recipe Tips
- Be sure to stay close to the saucepan when making the Alfredo sauce – it can easily boil over and needs to be continually whisked, so make sure you are able to stay there and do that.
- I like to cook the ground chicken mixture, drain the excess moisture from the pan, and then just leave it inside the pan with the heat on low heat while I make the Alfredo sauce. This way, I can concentrate on making the Alfredo sauce (it doesn’t take long) without worrying about leaving to do something with the ground chicken mixture. I then combine the two and let it simmer until thickened to my liking.
- I like to pair sloppy joes with tater tots, a simple green salad, steamed vegetables, or some freshly cut fruit (strawberries, cantaloupe, berries, etc). This will all help balance the dish’s richness.
- For the best tase I always recommend toasting/broiling the buns for serving. I lay out both sides of the bun onto a cookie sheet, spread butter on each half or spray them with cooking spray, and broil for just a few minutes. This makes the buns firmer and crispier, so they don’t get as soggy when served with the sloppy joe mixture.
