Crockpot Asian Meatballs (Asian-Style Meatballs)

Slow Cooker Asian Meatballs are the perfect dinner idea when you still want dinner at home but something that only requires a few minutes of prep. It’s a simple dump & go slow cooker recipe that starts with prepared frozen meatballs + a few other asian-inspired ingredients.

The meatballs simmer all day in the sweet & savory Asian sauce – when it’s time for dinner, simply cook some white rice, or other rice or base of choice, and dinner is ready! Don’t forget the garnish of sesame seeds and green onions cause they make a big difference.

Ingredients Needed For Slow Cooker Asian Meatballs

  1. Fully Cooked Frozen Meatballs (Homestyle) : Using frozen cooked meatballs is the best way to get dinner prepped in just minutes. Simply dump the frozen meatballs into the slow cooker and that’s it. No need to thaw, or mix together tons of ingredients to make homemade meatballs. I have found the plain traditional homestyle meatballs taste the best in this recipe – rather than the frozen Italian meatballs. Ground turkey frozen meatballs are another good option if wanted.
  2. Hoisin Sauce : This is an asian condiment/sauce that can be found near the soy sauce and sesame oil at the grocery store.
  3. Low-Sodium Soy Sauce
  4. Honey
  5. Rice Vinegar : I use the unseasoned rice wine vinegar.
  6. Sesame Oil
  7. Fresh Garlic Cloves : Use garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, or use chopped garlic from the jar, or garlic paste. Make sure to read the instructions on the packaging to see how much of it equals 1 fresh garlic clove.
  8. Fresh Grated Ginger or Ginger Paste : Using freshly grated ginger root, or ginger paste in a tube, is the best way to get that ginger flavor.
  9. Sriracha Sauce : This is optional and can be adjusted to match your heat preference.
  10. Sesame Seeds & Sliced Green Onions : Optional, but I highly recommend using them for serving. It makes the meatballs look pretty and adds a burst of flavor for serving.

How To Make This Asian Meatball Recipe In The Slow Cooker

Spray the slow cooker insert lightly with cooking spray. Dump the frozen meatballs into the slow cooker.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and sriracha (if using) until combined well. Pour the sauce over the meatballs and stir everything together to ensure that all the meatballs are coated with the sauce.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on LOW heat for 4-6 hours or until the meatballs have reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.

If serving as an appetizer, sprinkle the meatballs with sesame seeds and green onions and place toothpicks nearby to make eating easy. If serving as an easy dinner recipe, serve the meatballs over cooked white rice with a drizzle of some extra sauce (from the crockpot) and garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

How To Store Leftover Meatballs

Store leftover meatballs in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage you can freeze the meatballs in a freezer-safe container or bag (in a single layer so they don’t stick) for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

Serving Suggestions

The great thing about these meatballs is that they can be served as a party appetizer or as a complete meal for family dinner. If I am making them to serve as an appetizer, I will leave the cooked meatballs in the slow cooker on the WARM setting and then set out a small container of toothpicks for easy serving. You can also transfer the tender meatballs to a serving platter as well

For dinnertime, serve some meatballs over cooked rice (white or brown rice) and then drizzle on some extra sauce from the slow cooker, and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions. If someone wants more salt flavor, or just more sauce, set out a bottle of soy sauce to be used if needed.

Recipe Tips

  1. Use Homestyle Meatballs : I have made this recipe several time, with different types of meatballs, and they tastes the ver best when traditional homestyle meatballs were used. The Italian meatballs have a different taste to them, seasoning wise, and don’t pair well with the asian flavors in this recipe.
  2. Want To Use Ground Ginger? : Using ground ginger is a common swap in this recipe and it’s easy to do. Use 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger instead of 2 tablespoons fresh ginger.
  3. How To Use Fresh Ginger : Fresh ginger comes in ‘ginger root’ pieces. It looks like a piece of root but underneath the thick skin-like exterior is the fresh ginger. Peel away the skin with a vegetable peeler and then use the fine side of a box grater, or a microplane zester, to grate/zest the ginger. You could also use ginger paste which is ready-to-use fresh ginger in a paste.

Meatballs : I have made this recipe several time, with different types of meatballs, and they tastes the very best when traditional homestyle meatballs were used. The Italian meatballs have a different taste to them, seasoning wise, and don’t pair well with the asian flavors in this recipe. No need to thaw the meatballs beforehand, simply dump them in straight from the freezer.
Ginger : Fresh ginger comes in ‘ginger root’ pieces. It looks like a piece of root but underneath the thick skin-like exterior is the fresh ginger.
