EASY SESAME CHICKEN RECIPE

This slow cooker sesame chicken recipe is so easy to make thanks to only 4 ingredients! No chopping needed. No extra dirty dishes. And about 2 minutes of prep is all you need for this delicious Asian Sesame Chicken.

Slow Cooker Asian Sesame Chicken

Asian Sesame Salad Dressing

This is a bottled salad dressing that you find at the grocery store. I always use the Kraft Brand but there are so many to choose from. Be sure and get a dressing that is an Asian sesame flavor. Any brand will work just fine. You can also get the lite or regular.

Apricot Preserves

You can find apricot preserves by the jam and jelly. This gives a great flavor and sweetness to the sauce so don’t skip it! If you can’t seem to find the apricot, you could possibly try the orange marmalade or other citrus type preserve. And if you’re worried about sugar then look for a low sugar or no sugar version of it at the store.

Onion Soup Mix Seasoning Packet

Just one packet is all you need. Each box usually comes with two packets inside, just use one of them. If you’d rather use homemade then try this fabulous recipe for homemade onion soup mix.

Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast

I always use fresh but frozen will work just fine too! Be sure and keep the chicken whole, or cut in half if they are larger, so that they don’t dry out during the cook time.

When it’s time to serve you can serve the whole (or halved) pieces on top of rice OR you can shred the chicken and put it back in with the sauce in the crock pot, and then serve it that way over rice.

Slow Cooker Asian Sesame Chicken is an easy, 4 ingredient chicken recipe that's made in the slow cooker for a simple, dump & go dinner recipe.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 lbs)
  • 1 bottle (16 oz) asian toasted sesame dressing (I use the Kraft brand)
  • 1/3 cup apricot preserves
  • 1 packet (1 oz) onion soup mix
  • chopped green onions & sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Spray slow cooker insert with cooking spray. Lay chicken in bottom of slow cooker. If the chicken breasts are really large then cut them in half. I usually cut them in half anyways to make it easier at serving time.
  • Mix together the Asian sesame salad dressing, apricot preserves, and onion soup mix packet. Stir together with a fork and pour over the chicken.
  • Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours.
  • Serve over cooked rice (brown or white), quinoa, noodles, or cauliflower rice. Drizzle with sauce from the slow cooker and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

The calorie count is for one chicken breasts + 1 cup white rice.

Use any brand of Asian sesame salad dressing. I normally just get the Kraft brand.

I’ve used light dressing and regular and both work just fine. If you’re worried about sugar content use some sugar-free apricot preserves. You will find the apricot preserves by the jams and jellies.

The onion soup mix box comes with 2 packets inside. Only use one packet. Not both.

  2. You need to learn how to count. There are 6 ingredients in your “4” ingredient dish. Sesame seeds isn’t even counted in your sesame chicken. You’re silly.

    1. Together As Family says:

I guess my college degree was not worth it, haha 🙂 Yes, thank you for pointing out the ingredient count. The additional 2 ingredients are totally optional garnishes that you can choose to use or not. Thanks for visiting Joe.

    2. Wow Joe, you’re a jerk. You need to learn some manners. Personally I think it looks easy and delicious and will be trying it this week.

    3. Sesame seeds can be included in dressings, Teriyaki Sauce etc but why are you being a dick?

    4. Learn how to read instead, because the recipe obviously says the seeds and onions are OPTIONAL

  3. A lot of the sesame chicken recipes out there do use sesame seeds as optional garnishes. I think it can stand as a 4 recipe dish! Cooking it tonight.

    1. Cynthia Young says:

Plan to try tomorrow, but only have chicken tenders on hand. About how many tenders do you recommend (or not) for this delicious looking meal? ?

      1. Together As Family says:

Chicken tenders would work fine but will need less cooking time. I would maybe start at 2-4 hours on low heat and see from there.

  6. Can you use this recipe on high instead of low in the slow cooker?

    1. Together As Family says:

I would recommend doing the LOW heat. But you could give it a try on HIGH and just watch it.

  7. How many pounds of chicken? It says 4 chicken breast but they can vary by size. Would 1 1/2lbs be enough? Or more towards 2lbs?

    1. Together As Family says:

4 chicken breasts is roughly 1 1/2 – 2 lbs. Anywhere in there and you’ll be fine.

  8. Together As Family says:

So sorry to hear the flavor was off for you! As for the chicken, 5 hours is not nearly long enough cook time for 5 large chicken breasts. Which is probably why they turned out tough. Thanks for your feedback.

I have made this recipe so many times now. It is definitely a favorite with my boyfriend and me! I actually like to make it when it’s cooked like little chicken nuggets (cubes maybe? haha!). Just cooks for an hour or so less.

If it didn’t work the first time try it one more time. It won’t disappoint!

    LOVE THIS RECIPE.

  14. Hi! I don’t have a slow-cooker, but I have a dutch oven. Any tips for how to cook with the dutch oven? Love asian sesame chicken so I’m super excited to try it.

    1. Together As Family says:

I have no clue! I’ve never cooked with a dutch oven before. So sorry I can’t help more. Maybe google ‘how to make a slow cooker recipe in a dutch oven’. That’s what I would do anyways 🙂 Hope that helps.

  15. Katie Desautels says:

If I am only cooking 2 chicken breasts should I cook for less time?

    1. Together As Family says:

Yes, it probably won’t take as long. Just check the chicken after 3-4 hours and check the temperature (165 for chicken).

Alright, I don’t actually make this as written. I just use the sauce recipe and put it on baked breaded popcorn chicken. It is really good and a lot like Chinese restaurant sesame chicken, and the sauce is so easy to make. I still sprinkle on some sesame seeds and garnish with green onion.

    1. Together As Family says:

      I love that idea!

  17. CATHERINE GUY says:

Any way to reduce the sodium? Onion soup mix is so high in salt, but there’s on “lite” version.

    1. Together As Family says:

You could make your own onion soup seasoning mix instead of the store bought packet. I don’t have a recipe for it but if you google it, or search Pinterest, I am sure you can find a good recipe for it.

Wow…Joe…really? Please stop and think before you post a comment. What was your intention? I’m glad people called you out. And I have to say, the response from Together as Family was extremely gracious and classy. I am making this recipe now. It smells delicious! I’m going to use the leftover chicken and sauce for fried rice. Thank you for taking the time to post so I have an easy, yummy dinner to feed my family in a few hours and a dinner plan for tomorrow.

    1. Lucy Pulsipher says:

Thanks so much KB! Glad I have comments from people like you to brighten my day! Love the idea of using the leftover chicken and sauce for fried rice.

  19. Hi! This recipe looks amazing and I plan on making it tomorrow. All I have on hand are boneless chicken thighs and was wondering how long you might recommend cooking them? Thanks for sharing your recipe and for your assistance.

    1. Together as Family says:

The cook time would be approximately the same, maybe shorter since thighs are smaller but I would think 6 hours would be a good time to plan on. Just make sure to temp the chicken!

  20. I just added this to my list of new recipes to makes. Looks great.
Thanks, Linda H. in Keno, Oregon

  21. Nicolle Slaby says:

Love this recipe!! I also change it up and use thicker pork chops too. So good!

    1. Together as Family says:

      Thank you!

  22. Can this recipe be a freezer meal. And what can I use in place of the apricot jam?

    1. Together as Family says:

It should work as a freezer meal! If you’re cooking it from frozen I would plan for the max cook time and maybe plan for an extra 30-60 minutes to be safe. You would want another jam, maybe grape 🤷🏻‍♀️, because jam has the concentrated flavors the meat needs. Let me know how it turns out if you try it!
