Grinch Popcorn Recipe (Green Popcorn + Red M&M’s)

One movie that my family watches every Christmas is always How The Grinch Stole Christmas! It’s pretty much an iconic movie and what makes it even better – are some Grinch themed treats to go along with it.

Easy to make with popped popcorn, marshmallows, butter, and red M&M’s to represent the Grinch’s heart.

Ingredients Needed

  1. Popped Popcorn : I use 3 bags (3 ounces each) of microwaveable popcorn for this recipe, which comes out to about 10 cups. You can use any popcorn you want. For a sweeter grinch popcorn use kettle corn, or use extra buttery popcorn, or buy a bag of smart pop or skinny pop and use 10 cups of that. Lots of options here!
  2. Butter
  3. Mini Marshmallows
  4. Vanilla Extract
  5. Green Gel Food Coloring : Gel food coloring is best because you need less of it to accurately color the marshmallow mixture. I use the Wilton brand gel food coloring in either green or the neon green color.
  6. Red M&M’s : This is what creates that red heart for The Grinch. You can use any red candy you want like heart shaped sprinkles, red hot candies, hot tamales, red gummy bears or Christmas shaped gummies, etc.

Place the popped popcorn into a large bowl.

Melt the butter inside a saucepan, over low-medium heat. Once melted, add the mini marshmallow and continuously stir until they are completely melted and it’s a smooth mixture. Stir in the vanilla extract until combined.

Recipe Tips For Making Grinch Popcorn

  • Spreading the marshmallow-coated popcorn can get really sticky! Spraying your hands lightly with cooking spray before handling the mixture will help. You can also spray the wooden spoon or rubber spatula with cooking spray to help spread it out onto the parchment paper.
  • Be sure to have the popcorn popped and inside the bowl before you melt the butter and marshmallows, or it could harden before you have the chance to pour it over the popcorn.
  • Add the food coloring in small increments – like one small drop at a time and start with one drop. Otherwise, the marshmallow mixture could clump up and you might end up with really green popcorn.
