Easy Grinch Pretzel Rods For A Christmas Grinch Party

Make it a fun family movie night and watch The Grinch with some of these festive and cute themed Grinch Pretzel Rods.

Simple to make with white chocolate chips, green gel food coloring, and a red heart-shape sprinkle to represent The Grinch’s heart.

Even the kids will love getting involved and dipping the pretzel rods into the melted chocolate.

Ingredients Needed

  1. White Chocolate Chips : Use a good quality white chocolate chip rather than the cheaper, store brand ones that tend to taste more like vanilla melts. I love the Guittard or Ghiradelli brand of white chocolate chips.
  2. Green Gel Food Coloring : I use the neon green food coloring or the leaf green gel food coloring. Both are from the Wilton brand.
  3. Coconut Oil : This helps the white chocolate from seizing up while in the microwave, and it will also make the chocolate smooth and shiny, which makes it more ‘dippable’.
  4. Pretzel Rods
  5. Small Heart-Shaped Heart Sprinkles

How To Make Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods Like The Grinch

Prepare a rimmed cookie sheet/baking sheet , or a clean countertop, and line it with parchment paper or wax paper. Set aside for later.

Dump the white chocolate chips inside a microwave-safe bowl along with the coconut oil. Melt for 1 minute and then stir it really well. Heat in additional 20 second increments, as needed, stirring well after each one until it’s completely smooth and melted.

Once melted, add the green gel food coloring and stir until desired “grinch” color is achieved. Start with 1 drop and stir well before adding additional drops.

Working with one pretzel rod at a time, dip the pretzel rod into the green melted chocolate 3/4 of the way. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off the pretzel rod and back into the bowl of melted chocolate. Place the dipped pretzel onto the parchment paper. Repeat until all the pretzels are coated.

Scrape the remainder of the green melted chocolate into a piping bag or a small Ziploc bag. Cut the tip of the bag and drizzle the chocolate in a zigzag pattern across the pretzel rods.

Carefully place a red heart onto each pretzel rod. Allow the pretzel to dry at room temperature for up to 1 hour or until set.

Substitution & Variation Ideas

  • Green Candy Melts : Instead of using white chocolate chips + green gel food coloring, use a 12 ounce bag of green candy melts. There will be plenty leftover to drizzle over the pretzel rods. Omit the green gel food coloring if using already colored candy melts.
  • White Melting Wafers or White Candy Melts : Another option, instead of white chocolate chips, is to use a bag of white melting wafers (Ghiradelli brand) or a bag of Wilton brand white candy melts. Add the green gel food coloring into it as the recipe calls for.
  • Can’t Find The Hearts? : Use red sanding sugar, red mini M&M’s, or a small red hot candy. You could also use green sanding sugar to decorate the pretzel rods as well. I usually have the best luck finding the heart shaped sprinkles at a craft store or the cake decorating aisle.

Recipe Tips

  • Make sure to not overcook the white chocolate in the microwave. It’s important to microwave in small increments and then stir it really well. As you stir it, the chocolate will continue melting on its own and becoming more smooth. If you overcook the chocolate then it will seize up and you will have to start over.
  • Place the green melted chocolate into a tall jar (cup or mason jar) to make dipping the long pretzel rods really easy!
  • If you can’t find the red heart sprinkles then try using red M&M’s (mini sized work best) or cut small red paper hearts from red construction paper and place them on. If you are using paper, it’s important to not eat it! Remove the heart before eating. Or use red sanding sugar to add some red sprinkles onto one area of the pretzel rods for the heart.
