Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 4 Ground Beef Patties – You will find these prepared in ready-to-use packages at the grocery store. I love using the patties because they are already shaped perfectly and it makes prep really easy.
  • Hamburger Seasoning – Choose your favorite seasoning blend and use it! There are lots of brands and flavor options for burger seasoning at the grocery store.
  • Pineapple Slices – Either from a can of pineapple rings or you can use fresh pineapple slices. I would recommend using a Pineapple Corer and Slicer if using a fresh pineapple for the slices.
  • Teriyaki Sauce – This is bottled teriyaki sauce that you will find by the other Asian ingredients like soy sauce.
  • Honey
  • Sesame Oil
  • Sliced Provolone Cheese
  • Hawaiian Hamburger Buns – I use the ones from King’s Hawaiian brand (not the slider size but regular hamburger bun size). Other brands make them as well. They are just sweeter Hawaiian buns that pair nicely with the burgers.
  • Green Lettuce
  • Sliced Tomatoes
  • Sliced Red Onion

How To Make This Hawaiian Burger Recipe (Step-by-Step Instructions)

  1. Prep : Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and grease generously with cooking spray or oil.
  2. Prep Sauce : Add the teriyaki sauce, honey, and sesame oil into a small bowl and whisk to combine.
  3. Prep Patties : Set out the 4 ground beef patties onto a cutting board and pat/press 1 teaspoon of hamburger seasoning onto each patty. Make sure to distribute the seasoning evenly onto both sides.
  4. Grill : Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees (or to your preferred preference). Towards the end of the cook time (after you have flipped them), place about 1 tablespoon of the sauce on each patty and then add a slice of cheese on top as well.
  5. Pineapple : Place the pineapple slices on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes per side. After flipping them, brush some sauce over the pineapple ring.
  6. Assemble Burgers : Place a green lettuce piece onto the bottom bun. Top the lettuce with a hamburger patty w/ cheese, then 2 pineapple slices, diced tomatoes, diced onion. Spread sauce onto the top bun and then place it on the burger. Enjoy!

What Is Hamburger Seasoning?

Hamburger seasoning is a dried seasoning mix that is a blend of different seasonings. It’s an easy way to flavor burger patties with hardly any effort. Just one seasoning blend and that’s it.

You can find lots of different varieties of ‘hamburger seasoning’ from different brands at the grocery store with the other dried seasonings. I use McCormick Grill Mates Hamburger Seasoning or the Traegar Seasoning. You won’t find the traegar one at grocery stores.

Find a blend of seasoning that you love and use that! It doesn’t even have to be labeled as ‘hamburger seasoning’. Kinders brand makes a lot of really yummy seasoning blends. Weber brand has a gourmet burger seasoning blend or a smoky burger blend. There are tons of options at the store so pick the one that sounds the best to you.

Are There Any Changes I Can Make To This Recipe?

Here are a few changes you can make to this recipe to fit your preferences and the ingredients you may have on hand.

  • Meat : You can use ground turkey, chicken, or pork instead of ground beef. I prefer using ground beef patties that are already formed and ready to grill.
  • Buns : Use whole wheat buns, brioche buns, or even lettuce leaves for a lower-carb option.
  • Cheese : Substitute for another white cheese Swiss, white cheddar, or Monterey Jack.
  • Sauce : For more sauce try spreading a mixture of bbq sauce + mayo onto each bun half. You can even use some Hawaiian sauce and marinade and mix that with the mayo for more of that tropical flavor. Or double the teriyaki & honey sauce recipe if you prefer saucier burgers.

Can I Use Frozen Beef Patties To Make Burgers?

Yes you can use frozen beef patties to make these Hawaiian burgers. Make sure they are completely thawed, in the refrigerator, before using them.

Grocery stores sell frozen beef patties as well as fresh packages of beef patties that usually come in a pack of 4 patties. I use the Angus beef steak patties but any fresh patty will work fine.

How To Store Leftover Burgers

While the assembled burgers don’t store well, you can store the patties and other ingredients for the burgers all separately, even after it’s cooked.

Store the Hawaiian burger patties in an airtight container, in the fridge, for 3-4 days. Reheat on the grill, oven, stove top, or microwave.

The toppings, grilled pineapple, and sauce should all be store separately in airtight container, in the fridge, for several days.

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For The Grill

  • 4 ground beef patties
  • 4 teaspoons hamburger seasoning
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 8 pineapple slices or rings

Serving The Burgers

  • 4 hawaiian hamburger buns (toasted on grill or broiled in oven)
  • green lettuce leaves
  • sliced tomato
  • sliced red onion

Instructions

  • Prep : Preheat your grill to medium high heat and grease generously with cooking spray or oil.
  • Make The Sauce : In a small bowl whisk together the teriyaki sauce, honey, and sesame oil until combined. Set aside for later.
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Set out the patties and pat 1 teaspoon of hamburger seasoning into each patty, making sure to distribute it evenly on both sides.
4 ground beef patties, 4 teaspoons hamburger seasoning
  • Place the patties onto the hot grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side or until it reaches an internal temperature of 165℉.
After flipping the patties and when they're almost cooked, add 1 tablespoon of the sauce on top of each patty and then add a slice of cheese.
    4 slices provolone cheese
  • While the patties are cooking, place the pineapple rings on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes per side. After flipping, brush some sauce over each pineapple ring.
Remove from the grill onto a plate when they're done.
    8 pineapple slices or rings

Assemble & Serve The Burgers

  • Place the bottom bun onto a plate and cover it with a leaf of green lettuce. Top the lettuce with a cooked burger patty from the grill, then add 2 grilled pineapple slices, tomato slices, and red onion slices.
4 hawaiian hamburger buns, green lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced red onion
  • Drizzle any leftover sauce over the assembled burger and top with the other bun.
    * If you want extra sauce to spread on the buns, I suggest doubling the sauce recipe. The amount listed makes just enough to brush on the patties and pineapple slices.

Notes

Ground Beef Patties : You will find these prepared in ready-to-use packages at the grocery store. I love using the patties because they are already shaped perfectly and it makes prep really easy. They also sell larger packs with more patties in them – if you’re making these burgers for more people. If using frozen patties, be sure and let them thaw completely in the refrigerator before grilling and seasoning.
Pineapple Slices/Rings : Lots of options here! I think fresh pineapple tastes best so I buy a pineapple and use a pineapple corer/slicer on it, or I buy a container of fresh pineapple rings that are ready to use at the grocery store. You can use canned pineapple rings but they are softer so they may have a harder time being grilled – but they should work just fine.
Toasted Hamburger Buns : I love using the sweeter Hawaiian buns for this burger recipe. You can easily find them with the other hamburger buns at the store. If you have room, throw them on the grill to toast them and warm them up for serving, OR use the oven and broil the buns for 1-2 minutes to toast and heat them for serving.
