Patriotic Pretzel Rods (Red, White & Blue Recipe)

I am trying to squeeze in a couple last minute 4th of July treats for y’all. I figured it would be ok because these patriotic pretzel rods are one of the easiest red, white, and blue treats you will ever make.

Buy a bag of pretzel rods and three different colors of candy melts and that’s it! If you can find them, the gold star shaped sprinkles make for a fun and festive addition to the American flag patriotic pretzel rods.

I always love making Holiday themed treats. Especially for the Fourth of July because there is so much you can do with those red, white, and blue colors and the American Flag look.

Ingredients Needed

  • Pretzel Rods – These come in a bag (you will find by the other pretzel varieties) and they are long, thick, like a rod shape. These are not the small and thin pretzel sticks.
  • Bright White Candy Melts
  • Royal Blue Candy Melts
  • Red Candy Melts
  • Star Sprinkles – These are optional if you can find them. I’ve seen them in the cake decorating aisle at stores like Walmart or craft stores, or sometimes you can find them in the baking aisle of any grocery store by the sprinkles.

How To Make American Flag Patriotic Pretzel Rods

  1. Prep : Line a baking sheet (cookie sheet) with parchment paper and set it aside.
  2. White Candy Melts : Begin by melting the bright white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup according to package directions. Once melted, pour the melted candy melts into a tall and slender cup or glass jar. Working one pretzel rod at a time, take a pretzel rod and dip 3/4 of the pretzel rod into the melted white candy. Allow the excess to drip off and place the pretzel rod on the parchment-line baking sheet. Repeat the white color with remaining pretzel rods. Let the rods dry at room temperature until the white melted candy is set.
  3. Blue Candy Melts : Melt the blue candy melts according to package directions. Pour the melted blue candy into a tall and slender cup or glass jar. Dip the top 1/3 of the white candy-coated pretzel rod into the melted blue candy. Allow the excess to drip off. Place the rod onto the parchment paper and immediately press a few star shaped sprinkles into the blue candy. Repeat with the remaining rods and allow them to dry completely.
  4. Red Candy Melts : Melt the red candy melts according to the package directions. Pour the melted red candy into a Ziploc sandwich size bag, or a piping bag with a small tip, and drizzle red lines over the white area (not covered in blue) of the pretzel rod. Allow the pretzel to finish drying completely before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Tall Slender Cup : Use a tall and slender cup for dipping the pretzel rods into. You want it slender so that the melted candy melts can fill it enough in order for the pretzel rod to be dipped into it. Measure a pretzel rod up against the jar or cup to make sure it will be tall enough in order to dip 3/4 of the pretzel rod into.
  • Candy Melts : These are labeled as ‘candy melts’ and I buy the Wilton brand. You will find them in the cake decorating aisle at Walmart or at any craft store in the cake decorating aisle.
  • Sprinkles : If you can’t find the star shaped sprinkles then use any patriotic themed sprinkles you can find. There are always red, white, and blue sprinkle varieties at the store. Or omit the sprinkles and/or star shaped sprinkles entirely and just go with the red, white, and blue.
