Melted Snowman Bark Recipe

I always love cute & adorable treats to make with my kids around Christmastime! This melted snowman bark is the perfect recipe to get the kids involved in. Melted white chocolate chips create the ‘melted snowman base’ and then you simply decorate with some pretzels sticks for the arms, mini m&m’s for the buttons, Reese’s mini for the hat, and black pearl & orange sprinkles for the eyes and nose.

These look really cute tied up in a clear bag and tied with Christmas ribbon for a delicious family, friends, or neighbor gift.

Ingredients Needed

  • White Chocolate Chips – Use a high quality, name brand bag of white chocolate chips like Guittard brand or Ghiradelli brand. I say this every time I share a recipe that uses white chocolate chips, but it makes a huge difference and that means a lot because white chocolate is already a very finicky chocolate to try to melt correctly.
  • Vegetable Shortening OR Oil – This is necessary to help the chocolate melt smoothly and not seize up. White chocolate is notorious for clumping, seizing, and being difficult to melt. So this neutral fat source is necessary. It will also make the chocolate easier to shape and mold into a melted snowman.
  • Reese’s Minis – These are the ones that come unwrapped inside the bag. Do not use the larger ones that are individually wrapped in the foil, they are too big.
  • Pretzel Sticks
  • Small Black Candy Pearls – These are usually found by the sprinkles or in the cake decorating aisle (at a store like Walmart). Sometimes they can also be found inside a sprinkle mix. If you can’t find them, there are substitutions that you can use instead.
  • Orange Sprinkles – Make sure that you are using the longer sprinkles, not the nonpareils, from a funfetti mix of sprinkles. Just pick out the orange ones.
  • Mini M&M’s – Make sure that you use the mini sized m&m’s as the larger ones are too big for these smaller melted snowman.

  • Preparation

    • Line two cookie sheets (baking sheets) with parchment paper, tin foil, or wax paper. Set aside.
  • Melt White Chocolate Chips + Shortening

    • Add the white chocolate chips and shortening (or oil if using) into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, microwave for another 30 seconds and stir again. If small lumps still remain, then microwave in additional 20 second intervals.
  • Melted Snowman

    • Drop spoonfuls of the melted white chocolate onto the parchment lined cookie sheets (8 per cookie sheet) to create a melted snowman puddle type look. Each snowman will use about 2 tablespoons of melted chocolate. Use your spoon to spread or squish the chocolate out into the desired shape.
    • Add one Reese’s mini half, upside down, at the top for the hat. Add a halved pretzel stick to each side for the arms. Place two of the small black pearls under the hat for the eyes, and then the orange sprinkle below that for the nose. Finally, add 3 mini m&m’s (all the same color or varied) for the buttons.
  • Set Completely

    • Allow the chocolate to set completely before serving and moving it to a serving platter. This will take about 1 hour.

Substitution Ideas

There are several things that you can substitute in this recipe. Here are some ideas!

  • Mini Chocolate Chips : Use mini chocolate chips for the buttons. I would suggest placing the chocolate chips upside down so the flat bottom of the mini chocolate chips is facing up for the buttons.
  • Christmas Mini M&M’s : Use a Christmas mix of mini M&M’s OR just pick the red and green mini m&m’s from a standard package.
  • Cinnamon Red Hots : For some heat, try using the small cinnamon red hot candies for the buttons. It pairs nicely with the sweet white chocolate.
  • Black Pearl Candy Eyeballs : These can be hard to find. I find them either in the cake decorating aisle or the baking aisle next to the other sprinkle mixes. You can also sometimes find small black pearls inside a sprinkle mix. If you’re still having trouble, try using some black colored cookie icing (from the squeeze tube you can buy at the store) to dot the eyes. You can also mini chocolate chips, black sprinkles, etc.
  • Sour Sugar Candy : Instead orange sprinkles, get a package of the sour string gummy candy and cut off a small slice from an orange one to use for the nose. You can also use orange Sour Patch Kids (cut off a small piece for the nose from the orange one), or anything else that is orange colored and small.
  • Shortening/Oil : Vegetable shortening, canola oil, or vegetable oil are all good options to use when melting the chocolate. We need some sort of neutral flavored fat source, and those are the best ones!

How To Store White Chocolate Bark

Store any leftover melted snowman bark at room temperature, inside an airtight container, for up to one week. If you find that it is getting too soft at room temperature, simply store it in the fridge.

Eat the bark at room temperature, chilled from the fridge, or let it sit out at room temperature for a few moments to soften once taken out of the fridge.

Recipe Tips

Here are a few of my helpful tips so that you can have success recreating this recipe in your own kitchen ♥

  • Vegetable Shortening : You must use a fat source when melting the white chocolate. This helps the chocolate to melt smoothly and it makes it easier to work with when you’re dropping and shaping the melted snowman part. Other good substitutes are canola oil or vegetable oil. You just want some sort of neutral flavored fat source.
  • Prep Work : I recommend preparing and getting all the little garnishes ready to go before starting the recipe. You want to press on the decorations immediately after shaping the melted snowman part.
  • Allow To Set Completely : It’s important to plan ahead and allow time for the chocolate to set completely before moving and serving the melted snowman bark. This will take about 1 hour.
  • White Chocolate : A bag of good quality white chocolate is the easiest thing to use (and least expensive!). I recommend using the Guittard brand or Ghiradelli brand for best results. You can also use a white chocolate baking bar as well (Baker’s brand or Ghiradelli brand makes them). If using a white chocolate baking bar you will need to snap the bar into the perforated squares before microwaving. You will need about 2.75 bars (4 ounces each) or just use 3 entire baking bars and you’ll have a little extra to maybe make 2 more melted snowman.
