The Best Homemade Salsa

I know there are tons of recipes for homemade salsa floating all over Pinterest and other blogs, but I wanted to share the one that I have probably made no less than 100 times, like, for real…. I would only ever call something ‘the best’ if it’s something that I have made a million times, and if it completely replaces the store-bought item for me. Since finding this salsa recipe, I won’t even buy bottled salsa anymore. I have another recipe coming up shortly that I deemed ‘the best’. Stay tuned for that one.

The Best Homemade Salsa- so easy, delicious, cheap to make, and way better than store bought.

This salsa is so fresh tasting and yummy, and it only takes a few ingredients. It makes probably 4 cups worth and costs around $2.00 to make, even cheaper when the canned tomatoes are on sale 🙂 I know with Memorial Day coming up lots of people gather with family and friends, and at least for me, whenever people gather it usually involves food. I have another fun appetizer-ish type recipe coming up tomorrow. Well, it’s actually a dessert, but totally perfect for people gathering together and eating.

This salsa will thicken up once it sits in the fridge. If you do make it, make sure to allow enough time for it to sit in the fridge to get cold and thicken up a bit. I would say make it the night before. I made this salsa a week ago, put the leftovers in the fridge, and it still tastes so fresh and delicious.

The Best Homemade Salsa

  • 1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes, drained in can (use the lid)
  • 1/2 of a jalapeno, seeded and diced
  • 1/2 of a yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 bunch of cilantro, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 of a lime, squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  1. Add ingredients into a blender or magic bullet. Puree or pulse until all combined. Blend for less time if you want it chunkier, blend longer for a smoother salsa (my preference).
  2. Store in fridge for several hours before serving.

* The recipe, as written above, is not spicy. My kids have no problem with this salsa. If you want more heat, just throw in the entire jalapeno (seeds included) into the blender.

I will leave you with a tip: my grocery store puts the limes in the fridge part of the produce section (so annoying!), so lots of times when I go to use it, the lime is hard and won’t produce any lime juice. Take the lime and put it under the palm of your hand and then roll it, while pressing down, on top of the counter. Hopefully that makes sense. As you do this you will smell the juice starting to, for lack of a better word, loosen up inside the lime. Now it will be easier to squeeze for some lime juice 🙂

Have a wonderful day friends,
