Comforting Hamburger Pie (Impossibly Easy Dinner Idea)

The original recipe for this hamburger pie came from the back of a Bisquick box! I love short-cut mixes, like bisquick, because you can prepare a hearty and comforting dinner in no time at all. Similar to this Bisquick Chicken Pot Pie recipe.

It includes pantry staples like shelf-stable Bisquick mix, dried seasonings, and refrigerated items that are usually always in the fridge like eggs and milk. You get that classic cheeseburger flavor with a layer of seasoned ground beef, topped with a soft, pillowy golden topping of cheesy Bisquick mix.

This is easy enough, and surprisingly delicious, that it might just earn a permanent spot in your weeknight rotation. It’s also one of those nostalgic recipes that you probably grew up eating, and one that has been scribbled on a recipe card and passed down – those are my favorite recipes❤︎

Only 8 Simple Ingredients Needed

  1. Ground Beef : I use 93/7 lean ground beef.
  2. Onion : A yellow onion, white onion, or sweet onion can be used; I prefer sweet onion.
  3. Garlic Cloves : Fresh garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, use chopped garlic from a jar, or garlic paste.
  4. Hamburger Seasoning : This is a dried seasoning that is normally labeled as ‘hamburger seasoning’ or ‘burger seasoning’, the one that I use is the Kinders brand (I love their seasoning blends) and it’s called Butchers Burger Blend.
  5. Bisquick
  6. Whole Milk
  7. Large Eggs
  8. Shredded Cheddar Cheese : I use medium cheddar but mild or sharp cheddar cheese can also be used.

How To Store Leftover Hamburger Pie

Hamburger pie leftovers should be stored in the refrigerator, covered or in an airtight container, for up to 3 to 4 days. To reheat, microwave for 45-60 seconds at a time until thoroughly heated.

Substitutions & Ingredient Notes

  • Ground Beef : Use any fat percentage ground beef you prefer as the grease will be drained anyways, or you can use a leaner option, such as ground turkey or ground chicken if wanted. Obviously for a hamburger pie – ground beef is preferred! I recommend using a leaner ground beef so your pie does not end up with excess grease as it bakes in the oven. So like 93/7 or 96/4.
  • Onion : Yellow onion, white onion, or for a mild flavor use a sweet onion.
  • Cheddar Cheese : Other options include american cheese, pepper jack cheese, colby jack, or white cheddar cheese.
  • Bisquick : They have original, reduced-fat, and gluten-free options so choose your preference. If using gluten-free, double check the ingredient amounts on the back because I am fairly certain it calls for an additional egg; so 3 large eggs if using gluten-free.

Pro Tips From The Test Kitchen

  • Drain the ground beef really well after cooking so the Bisquick topping sets properly, and the pie is not greasy.
  • To spice things up use shredded pepper jack cheese. Other great cheese options are mild, medium, or sharp cheddar cheese, white cheddar cheese, or colby jack cheese.
  • They do make gluten-free Bisquick mix but check the back of the box for the ingredient amounts, because it will probably call for 3 large eggs instead of 2 large eggs like this recipe calls for.
  • Instead of a round pie plate you could also use a 9×9-inch square baking dish instead. I like using the pie plate because then you cut it like a pie, and for some reason, my kids eat a ‘slice of pie’ better 😉

I like to serve this hamburger pie with toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced pickles, ketchup, mustard, sour cream, chopped tomatoes, jalapeños – are all great serving ideas. Or pair it with your family’s favorite vegetable such as green beans, carrots, corn, corn on the cob – prepared how your family likes it.
