Cajun Deviled Eggs Recipe

Classic Deviled Eggs are an iconic side dish, or appetizer, that are often served at holiday meals – like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Hard boiled egg whites are filled with a creamy egg yolk mixture that usually consists of mayonnaise and mustard.

Today’s recipe is a spicy twist to the classic – with lots of cajun seasoning (creole seasoning) and flavors like celery and bell pepper. Ingredients Needed

  1. Large Eggs : Start with 12 large eggs and cook them, your preferred method, to get hard-boiled eggs for the recipe. I prefer using the Instant Pot method, but you an also make them in the air fryer or boil them on the stove top in water (recipe included below in the recipe card).
  2. Mayonnaise : For the best taste and thick creamy texture I recommend using full-fat mayonnaise.
  3. Green Bell Pepper : Make sure the bell pepper is very finely minced, so there are no large chunks that overwhelm the creamy egg yolk filling.
  4. Finely Minced Celery : Again, make sure the celery is very finely mince to avoid large chunks of it.
  5. Yellow Mustard
  6. Cajun Seasoning
  7. Onion Powder
  8. Green Onion & Additional Cajun Seasoning : These are garnishes for the eggs for serving. They are optional but I recommend at least using the green onions. I normally don’t add any additional cajun seasoning over top the eggs just because it’s too spicy for my family.

How To Make Cajun Seasoned Deviled Eggs (Printable Recipe Card)

Place eggs in a pot and fill the pot with cold water until the eggs are covered. Bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, cover the pot with a lid and turn off the heat (leave the pot on the stove burner). Allow the eggs to sit for 12 minutes. Transfer the eggs to an ice bath (fill a bowl with water and lots of water) for a few minutes, until cool and you can easily handle them.

Peel the eggs and cut them in half length-wise. Set the egg whites onto a serving platter and scoop out the egg yolks into a mixing bowl.

Add the mayonnaise, bell pepper, celery, mustard, cajun seasoning, and onion powder to the egg yolks inside the mixing bowl. Using a fork, mash the ingredients together until they’re combined and smooth.

Spoon or pipe the egg yolk mixture into the egg whites.

Top with some thinly sliced green onions and additional cajun seasoning, if wanted. Serve! If you prefer the deviled eggs chilled for serving (like me!) leave off the garnishes and cover the deviled eggs with plastic wrap or a lid and store in the fridge for up to 4 hours before serving to chill them. Add the garnishes on right before serving.

Recipe FAQ’s

What Kind of Cajun Seasoning Do You Recommend?

I use the Slap Your Mama Cajun seasoning for this recipe, but any cajun seasoning blend will work great!

Will It Be Too Salty If I Sprinkle Additional Cajun Seasoning On Top?

Personally, I think it’s too salty if you add additional cajun seasoning on top of the eggs. However, everyone has different tastes so if you love the spiciness and favor of the cajun seasoning then add it!

What’s The Best Way To Cook Hard Boiled Eggs?

There are many great option when it comes to cooking hard boiled eggs. My favorite way are these Perfect Instant Pot Hard-Boiled Eggs. You can also make Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs or Hard Boiled Eggs In The Oven. There is an easy method for stove top hard-boiled eggs in the recipe card below.

Can I Make Them Ahead of Time?

Yes! Deviled eggs are the perfect thing to make the day before. Prepare them as directed, but without the garnishes, and then store them covered in the fridge for up to 24 hours before serving. Add the garnishes on right before serving.

What Is The Best Way To Add The Egg Yolk Filling To The Egg White For A Pretty Presentation?

If you’re wanting a pretty presentation for serving, I suggest transferring the egg yolk mixture to a large Ziplock bag. Snip the bottom corner off and use that “piping bag” to add the egg mixture to the egg whites. You can also use a real piping bag with a large 1A tip, or a pastry bag, to pipe the mixture. Or make it easy and simply use a spoon to add the deviled egg filling.

Can I Use A Different Mustard?

Yes! Feel free to use your favorite mustard – some options are spicy mustard, honey mustard for some sweetness, dijon mustard, or amp up that cajun flavor and use creole mustard.

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • thinly sliced green onions & additional cajun seasoning (optional garnishes)

Instructions

Hard-Boiled Eggs

  • Place eggs in a pot and fill the pot with cold water until the eggs are covered. Bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, cover the pot with a lid and turn off the heat (leave the pot on the stove burner).
    12 large eggs
  • Let the eggs sit for 12 minutes in the covered pot.
  • Transfer the eggs to an ice bath (fill a bowl with ice and water) for a few minutes, until cool and you can easily handle them.
*You can also cook the eggs your favorite way for hard-boiled eggs. I included this easy simple method, but I normally use the Instant Pot to cook mine.

  • Peel the eggs and cut them in half length-wise. Set the egg whites onto a serving platter and scoop out the egg yolks into a mixing bowl.
  • Add the mayonnaise, bell pepper, celery, mustard, cajun seasoning, and onion powder to the egg yolks inside the mixing bowl. Using a fork, mash the ingredients together until they're combined and smooth.
1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons finely minced green bell pepper, 2 tablespoons finely minced celery, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1-2 teaspoons cajun seasoning, ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Spoon or pipe the egg yolk mixture into the egg whites.
*I transfer the mixture to a large Ziplock bag, snip off the bottom corner, and use that to "pipe' the filling into the egg white halves.
  • Top with some thinly sliced green onions and additional cajun seasoning, if wanted. Serve!
*If you prefer the deviled eggs chilled for serving (like me!) leave off the garnishes and cover the deviled eggs with plastic wrap or a lid and store in the fridge for up to 12-24 hours before serving. Add the optional garnishes right before serving.
thinly sliced green onions & additional cajun seasoning

Notes

Cajun Seasoning : I use Slap Your Mama Cajun Seasoning. The cajun seasoning can be ‘spicy’ so use as little or as much as you want. I use 1 teaspoon and sometimes slightly less. If you love he spicy kick and taste of cajun seasoning then use 2 teaspoons and add the additional cajun seasoning garnish over top the deviled eggs. I never add the cajun seasoning as garish, I just use green onions.
Celery & Green Pepper : Make sure it’s really finely minced/chopped so you don’t end up with large chunks of vegetables in the creamy, smooth egg yolk filling mixture.
