Crockpot Steak Bites and Potatoes Recipe

If you ever thought that a steak dinner was too difficult to prepare, or too much work, then this easy meal is just what you need! Let the crockpot do all the work for ultra tender & soft steak and potatoes.

This entire meal only needs a few minute prep time thanks to easy ingredients like onion soup mix, stew steak meat, and whole baby potatoes that get dumped right into the slow cooker.

Ingredients Needed For This Easy Weeknight Meal In The Slow Cooker

  1. Baby Potatoes – You need a 1.5 pound bag of baby potatoes for this steak meal. The baby potatoes come in red potatoes and yellow potatoes, you can use whichever one you prefer. If wanted, cut russet potatoes into large pieces (like similar in size to the baby potatoes).
  2. Steak Cubes or Stew Meat – I like to use 1 pound of stew meat because it’s a tougher cut of meat that becomes very tender in the crock pot. Bonus, it’s already cut into pieces which means no prep time needed! However, you can use any cut of steak that you prefer like chuck steak, skirt steak, or flank steak.
  3. Beef Broth
  4. Onion – A yellow onion or white onion is the best option. Make sure it’s finely diced into small pieces.
  5. Garlic – Use fresh garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, use chopped garlic from a jar, or garlic paste.
  6. Onion Soup Mix Packet
  7. Steak Seasoning – This is a dried seasoning that you will find near the other dried seasoning blends. Pick your favorite and use it!

What Is The Best Steak To Use For Slow Cooker Steak and Potatoes?

There are several choices of steak that you can use in this recipe! Stew meat is already cut into pieces making it an easy choice, or try using other cuts such as chuck steak, flat iron steak, top sirloin steaks, rib eye steak, chuck roast, or round steak.

Serving Suggestions

A great way to serve this delicious recipe over egg noodles or cooked rice of choice. My family prefers it as is because it already is a pretty hearty meal on its own, and the steak piece and potatoes turn out so juicy and tender.

To make it a complete and hearty meal, serve it alongside some side dishes like green beans, roasted parmesan brussels sprouts, or honey butter corn.

Because of the potatoes already in the recipe, I don’t feel the need to serve it over a starch or carb. I love serving it alongside some fresh roasted vegetables or a simple salad for a balanced dinner. You can either make a gravy from the au jus sauce inside the crockpot or serve some steak sauce for drizzling over top.

Recipe Tips

  • Cut Steak Into Bite-Sized Pieces : Stew meat is already cut into larger pieces so there is no prep needed is using that. You can use another steak cut and cut it into larger, 1 to 2 -inch pieces (similar in size to the stew meat).
  • Steak Seasoning : I like the Kinder brand steak seasoning, but you can use your favorite steak seasoning blend like Montreal steak seasoning or Weber steak seasoning. Or pick your favorite seasoning blend and use that instead.
  • Baby Potatoes : Grocery stores sell a small bag (1.5 ponds) of baby potatoes. Just wash the potatoes, peel off any bad skin parts, and add them whole into the crockpot. If you are using regular sized potatoes (like russet potatoes) then you will want to chop them into larger pieces similar in size to the baby potatoes.
  • Cooking Tip : The meat will definitely get up to the correct temperature while cooking all day in the slow cooker. I love cooking steak for hours in the slow cooker because it gets ultra super tender and fall apart! if you’re worried, simply use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steak cuts before serving. Because steak can be served fairly raw the temperature will range from 125 degrees F to 165 degrees F. But again, there usually is no need to worry about it being at the correct temperature when cooking for hours in the crock pot.
  • Make Gravy : If you want the liquid to be thicker, more like a gravy, I recommend stirring together 1/4 cup water with 1/4 cornstarch (with a fork) until it forms a thin paste. Dump this into the crockpot and stir with a whisk. Put the meat and potatoes back in and let it cook for about 30 minutes. Remove the meat and potatoes before pouring and whisking in the cornstarch slurry for the gravy.
