Festive Halloween Popcorn Balls (With Halloween Candy)

I just love all the different Holiday colored and themed candies that start to show up this time of year. I am always a sucker for the holiday candy aisle at Target. I just can’t resist and end up buying way too much – which is actually just fine cause then I have an excuse to make these gooey marshmallow popcorn balls that are so festive and “spooky”!

Simple to make with easy ingredients, they are a kid-friendly treat that no one can resist and they look really fun on a halloween treat spread for a party. Colorful candies, edible candy eyeballs, and festive Halloween sprinkles really make them stand out.

How To Make It (Printable Recipe Card Below)

Spray a very large baking sheet (like a rimmed cookie sheet) OR a large mixing bowl with nonstick cooking spray. If using a rimmed cookie sheet, you can also line with parchment paper or wax paper.

Prepare the popcorn according to package directions. Place the popped popcorn into the prepared pan or bowl.

In a saucepan, over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the mini marshmallows and vanilla extract. Continue cooking over medium-low heat, while stirring frequently, until the marshmallows are completely smooth and melted.

How To Properly Store Gooey Marshmallow Popcorn Balls

To properly store the popcorn balls make sure they are in an airtight container, at room temperature, for up to 5 days. Even with the proper airtight storage, the popcorn balls do tend to get stale and the marshmallow mixture just doesn’t taste the same (not as soft & gooey) after a few days – I recommend making, serving, and eating the popcorn balls the day they’re made or the following day.

Recipe Tips For Success

  • Recipe Yield : Depending on how large, or small, you make the popcorn balls will change the yield of the recipe. If you want more popcorn balls then make sure to roll them into smaller balls.
  • Halloween Candy : Use any combination of Halloween candy for these popcorn balls. You can also use two different kinds of sprinkles and more of them than the 2 tablespoons that the recipe calls for. These popcorn balls are very adaptable to the candy you have or the candy you want to use. And if you have extra Halloween candy then be sure and make my Leftover Halloween Candy Cookie Bars.
  • Cooking Spray Tip : Making popcorn balls is notoriously a very sticky job which is why it’s important to spray your hands before mixing the popcorn with the melted marshmallow mixture, and spray them again when mixing in the candy. If needed, spray your hands throughout the process if things are getting too sticky.

Notes

Alternate Directions : If you’d rather not split up the candies (M&M’s, candy corn, and sprinkles) then just add them all at once to the popcorn before forming into balls. Then place the eyeballs on the outside of the popcorn balls.
Halloween Candies & Sprinkles : Use any small shaped Halloween colored candies that you want. Same with the sprinkles; pick your favorite mix and use it. Halloween skittles, mini M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces, and other small shaped candies will all work well.
