Texas Trash Pie Recipe

Texas trash pie is an easy recipe that tastes just like a candy bar! This pie is sweet and salty perfection with salty flavors from the pecans and pretzels, sweetness from the coconut and chocolate chips, and buttery goodness and texture graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sweetened condensed milk.

You don’t want to miss this dessert! Eat it as is, topped with whipped cream, or serve it with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top – either way, you can’t go wrong. The pie can be served at room temperature, or serve it slightly warm for a gooey pie with melted chocolate and caramel bits.

If you’ve ever had magic bars – this Texas trash pie is similar to those – all the ingredients imx together in one bowl and then you dump it into a frozen pie crust. Super easy and always a family favorite with so many textures and flavors going on.

Why Is It Called Texas Trash Pie?

Contrary to the name, this pie is anything but trash! Texas trash pie is a playful name to describe the abundance of diverse ingredients in the pie, similar to ‘everything-but-the-kitchen-sink’ type recipes that include a mix of various ingredients – such as caramel, pecans, pretzels, chocolate, crushed cookies and where everything gets thrown together in one pie or cookie.

The combination of sweet and salty element, along with varying textures, creates a dessert similar to a candy bar but in pie form.

Ingredients Needed

  1. Chopped Pecans : Chopped pecan pieces is what you’ll need for the pie; I buy a bag of ready-to-use chopped pecans and just dump them into the mixing bowl. The packages at my store come in 1/2 cup amounts, so I buy two bags and use that.
  2. Caramel Bits : These are small, chocolate chip sized caramel bits and you will usually find them near the chocolate chips in the baking aisle.
  3. Shredded Coconut
  4. Chocolate Chips : Use semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips. I prefer milk chocolate chips when I make this pie.
  5. Crushed Pretzels
  6. Graham Cracker Crumbs : You can buy a box of graham cracker crumbs and measure out 1 cup, or place whole graham cracker sheets into a food processor or chopper and pulse until fine crumbs.
  7. Sweetened Condensed Milk
  8. Salted Butter : Melt the butter in the microwave before adding it in with the other ingredients.
  9. Frozen Deep Dish Pie Crust

Pour the mixture into the deep dish pie crust and press it into an even layer and smooth out the top as best you can.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and the filling is set.

Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely (about 1 hour), on a wire cooling rack, before serving. Or you can serve the pie slightly warm for that melty, gooey texture if you prefer. If serving slightly warm, I would still let the pie cool for some time before trying to slice it and serve it (about 20-25 minutes or so).

How Should I Store Texas Trash Pie

Any leftovers of Texas trash pie should be stored covered inside the refrigerator, for up to 4-5 days. You can remove individual slices to an airtight container for storage, cover the pie with plastic wrap, or place the pie tin inside a deep dish pie plate and cover with a lid or plastic wrap.

Leftovers can be eaten chilled, or you can let a slice sit at room temperature for some time, or try warming up a slice in the microwave for 15-20 seconds (more as needed) for a warm and gooey texture.

This pie is best served to guests and family the same day it’s made. I don’t suggest making it ahead of time and storing in the fridge until serving. Plan on eating the pie within 1-2 hours of making it – after you have allowed for some cooling time after it comes out of the oven.

Serving Suggestions For Texas Trash Pie?

You can serve Texas trash pie at room temperature, after it has cooled completely, about 1 hour on a wire rack. Or you can serve the pie slightly warm still for a ooey, gooey treat and melty texture. Even if you are serving it slightly warm, I would still recommend letting it cool at room temperature for 20-25 minutes before you try to slice into it.

I prefer this pie when it’s slightly warm, and has cooled for about 20 minutes or so at room temperature. But you can decide how you like it best, and serve it that way. Either way, room temperature or warmed, it’s a decadent and delicious dessert.

You can eat the pie as is, or for an extra sweet treat try serving it with a scoop of ice cream (vanilla bean is a great choice) or whipped cream for something lighter. The warmth of the pie and the cold of the ice cream or whipped cream, makes for a comforting sensation of ooey-gooey goodness!

Recipe FAQs

Are There Any Substitutions I Could Make?

There really aren’t any substitutions that I would recommend making. All the filling ingredients called of serve a purpose for that perfect balance of salty flavors and sweetness. The only ingredient that can be switched are the chocolate chips – for a much sweeter pie use milk chocolate, or for more balance use semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. I actually prefer using half milk chocolate + half semi-sweet chocolate.

Can This Pie Be Made Gluten-Free?

Yes, make sure you switch out the pretzels, graham crackers, and pie crust for gluten-free options, and it will be gluten-free. It is also naturally egg-free, so nuts and dairy are the only allergies that would still exist in this pie.

What If The Pie Starts To Become Brown On Top But Still Appears To Be Loose Throughout?

If your pie is browning quicker than the center is setting up, loosely lay a piece of aluminum foil over top the pie and continue to let it finish baking.

What Rack Is Best To Put The Pie On In The Oven?

it’s best to bake things on the middle rack in the oven. That way, the bottom of the crust doesn’t burn easily, and the top won’t burn quickly either. The pie will get a more even cook from the top and bottom of the pie when placed on the middle rack.

Or you can serve the pie slightly warm for that melty, gooey texture if you prefer. If serving slightly warm, I would still let the pie cool for some time before trying to slice it, otherwise the pie may fall apart if cut too early (about 20-25 minutes or so of cooling time).

Notes

This is a rich and decadent dessert so use whichever chocolate chip you prefer. For more sweetness use milk chocolate chips, for more of a balance use semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. You can also use a mixture of them; I like to sometimes use half milk chocolate + half semi-sweet or half dark chocolate. It just really depends on your preference.
