Delicious Ground Beef and Broccoli Recipe (Skillet Dinner Recipe)

This easy ground beef and broccoli recipe is the perfect balance of convenience, flavor, and comfort. It’s a simple twist on a classic takeout favorite that you can feel good about making at home – and it’s guaranteed to be a hit at the dinner table.

I love using ground beef in this classic beef and broccoli recipe because it’s more convenient, cheaper, and it’s easy enough for anyone to make in the kitchen. No more buying expensive cuts of steak!

It’s similar to a stir-fry because it’s made in one pan, on the stove top, with a slightly sweet and savory sauce and a ground beef broccoli stir fry.

Serve over cooked white rice, brown rice, fried rice, lo mein noodles, inside lettuce cups, or cauliflower rice for lighter low-carb options. You can garnish with sesame seeds, sliced green onions, and even some red pepper flakes for some spice.

Ingredients Needed

  1. Lean Ground Beef : I use 93/7, any percentage will work but a leaner ground beef will make the mixture less greasy.
  2. Onion : A sweet onion, yellow onion or white onion will all work well.
  3. Beef Broth : Other options include beef bone broth, beef stock, or beef bouillon + water.
  4. Soy Sauce : I recommend using regular, full salt soy sauce as there is no additional salt called for in the recipe; however, you can use reduced-sodium soy sauce as well.
  5. Garlic Cloves : Fresh garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, or use the equivalent to 4 cloves in the chopped jarred garlic or garlic paste.
  6. Cornstarch
  7. Honey
  8. Freshly Grated Ginger : Use fresh ginger, peel it with a vegetable peeler (the rough exterior) and then grate it. Or you can use ginger paste.
  9. Black Pepper
  10. Fresh Broccoli Florets : Cut these into small pieces. It’s best to only use the green leafy tree part, and not the rough stalks. Just chop the green tree type part off and chop into small pieces.

How To Make Beef and Broccoli With Ground Beef (Printable Recipe Card)

In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, cook and crumble the ground beef and onion. Once the ground beef is no longer pink, drain off any excess grease from the skillet.

In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, minced garlic, cornstarch, honey, grated ginger, and black pepper until combined.

Add the sauce mixture and chopped broccoli to the skillet pan, cover the skillet with a lid, and cook for 5-8 minutes or until the broccoli is tender and soft to your preference.

Remove the lid and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Serve over cooked white rice and enjoy!

How To Store and Reheat Leftovers

Ground beef and broccoli should be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, microwave individual portions for 60-90 seconds until desired temperature is reached.

You can store the cooked rice and broccoli ground beef stir fry in operate container, or store it all together in one container. I also like to add a splash of water when microwaving leftover rice to help soften it again.

Substitutions & Ingredient Notes

  • Ground Beef : Shaved beef is another option. If you want a really lean meat option you can use ground turkey.
  • Onion : I like using a sweet onion but a yellow onion or white onions works well too. A white onion will have a sharper, spicier onion flavor while a yellow onion is more mild.
  • Beef Broth : I use full salted beef bone broth (Kettle & Fire brand is what I like). Other options include water + beef bouillon, low sodium versions, or beef stock.
  • Soy Sauce : The full salted version can be used (my preference) or the reduced-sodium soy sauce. For a gluten-free option, use coconut aminos or a gluten-free soy sauce.
  • Garlic : Use fresh garlic cloves that have been minced or pressed, use garlic paste, or chopped garlic from a jar.
  • Ginger : Buy a piece of fresh ginger and use a vegetable peeler to peel the rough exterior. Then grate it on the fine side of a grater. Another option is to buy a tube of fresh ginger paste and measure out the amount needed.
  • Honey : Other options include maple syrup, agave, or packed light brown sugar. You can add more or less sugar (or other sweetener) depending on preference. I have used honey + brown sugar when making this recipe and that combo is really delicious. So I will use the 2 tablespoons honey and then add an additional 1 tablespoon packed light brown sugar. This will make it sweeter, but the combination is really good. Or you could use half honey + half light brown sugar.
