Apple Blueberry Crumble Recipe – Easy Dessert Recipe with an Oatmeal Cookie Mix
This apple blueberry crumble is an easy dessert with sweet apples, juicy blueberries, and topped with a buttery crumble! If you’re a big fan of crumbles on fruit crisp desserts then you’re going to love this one.
The crunchy oat crumble is so simple to make with a store-bought, prepared oatmeal cookie mix with some additional oats and butter. The crumble then gets flash frozen so that it will keep it’s hearty texture even while baking.
If you love warm fruit desserts then this easy apple dessert with blueberries is a must-make. It’s a cross between a Simple Apple Crisp and a Blueberry Dump Cake.
Ingredients Needed For This Fruit Crumble
Buttery Oat Crumble
- Oatmeal Cookie Mix – This is a bag of oatmeal cookie mix that has the dry ingredients inside it. You will find it in the baking aisle next to the cake mixes and muffin mixes. No need to prepare it according to the instructions on the package, just dump in the dry contents from the package.
- Rolled Oats – For the best texture use whole old-fashioned oats. Quick oats can be used as well if you prefer a smaller and finer crisp topping.
- Salted Butter – Let the butter soften to room temperature so it easily mixes in with the other ingredients. Unsalted butter can be used but you may need to add some additional salt to help balance the sweetness.
Warm Fruit Crumble Mixture
- Frozen Blueberries : The frozen juicy blueberries are ideal for this crumble because they release lots of juices as they bake, which helps the fruit crumble have some flavor and fruit juice to it. Plus, frozen blueberries store very easily in the freezer so this is a quick easy dessert that can be whipped up in no time.
- Granny Smith Apples : Tart apples are the ideal apple to use because they pair well with the sweet oatmeal cookie topping and juicy blueberries. Make sure the apples are in thin slices so they will cook in the time given. The goal is to have tender apples without any crisp to them.
- Brown Sugar : Use light brown sugar or dark brown sugar. Light brown sugar is what most recipes use and what this recipe has been tested with. Dark brown sugar has a stronger taste to it because of the molasses in it. For a sweeter crispy crumble topping replace the brown sugar with white sugar.
- Ground Cinnamon
- Vanilla Ice Cream : A scoop of vanilla ice cream is the best way to serve this warm fruit crumble! My family loves vanilla bean ice cream with this. Or amp up the flavor and use a blueberry pie ice cream or an apple pie ice cream. Or try French vanilla or classic vanilla ice cream.
How to Make Apple and Blueberry Crumble With Detailed Instructions (Recipe Card Below)
- Blend together the oatmeal cookie mix, rolled oats, and salted butter in a medium bowl, using a hand or stand mixer, until crumbly.
- Cover a baking sheet (cookie sheet) with parchment paper and pour the oatmeal crumble onto it, making sure to spread it into an even layer. Place the crumble in the freezer for 20 minutes while you prepare the rest.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray. Set aside.
- Add the frozen blueberries and sliced apples into the prepared baking dish. Mix it up and spread into an even layer inside the pan.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar over top of the fruit mixture. Then sprinkle the ground cinnamon all over the fruit.
- Take the crumble out of the freezer and sprinkle the semi-frozen crumble over top, trying to get it into an even layer.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the top is golden brown, the fruit is bubbling up, and the apples can easily be pierced with a fork. If the top is browning too much and the apples are not done yet, simply lay a piece of aluminum foil over top the baking dish.
Can I Use Fresh Blueberries Instead of Frozen Blueberries?
Yes you can use fresh blueberries. Keep in mind that they will lose their texture while baking and will end up fairly soft once the bake time is up. The blueberry apple crumble won’t be as juicy if using fresh berries. Frozen fruit gives off more fruit juices and liquid while baking.
What’s The Best Apple To Use For Fruit Crumble?
It’s best to use a tart and crisp apple for baking, like granny smith apples, to help balance the sweetness from the oatmeal cookie topping. However, any baking type of apple will work fine if you prefer a sweeter apple mixture filling. Use gala apples, pink lady apples, fuji apples, or for a really sweet filling use red delicious apples (although I don’t personally recommend using these).
How To Store Apple and Blueberry Crumble
The apple and blueberry crumble can be stored in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 4 days. You can also just leave the leftovers inside the baking dish and cover it with a lid. To reheat leftovers, warm up individual servings of the fruit crumble inside the microwave.
Can I Make Any Changes To This Easy Crumble Recipe?
There are several ways that you can change up this recipe if you want to! Here are some ideas to get you started.
- Fruit : Use different types and combinations of fruit. For the frozen blueberries, try using frozen peaches, frozen berry mix, frozen cherries. For the fresh apple slices try using sliced peaches, sliced pears, etc. I do recommend sticking with the one fresh fruit + 1 frozen fruit.
- Add Nuts : Try adding chopped walnuts, almonds, or pecans to the crumble for a crunchy texture and nutty flavor.
- Sweetener : You can use different types of sweeteners (in place of the brown sugar) like pure maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar. You can also use a brown sugar substitute.
- Gluten-Free Option : To make this recipe gluten-free, use gluten-free oats and a gluten-free oatmeal cookie mix.
- Vegan Option : You can use vegan butter and a vegan cookie mix to make this recipe vegan-friendly.
