Ground Beef Stroganoff is an easy dinner recipe that comes together quickly with ground beef, a gravy packet for lots of flavor, sour cream, and cream of mushroom soup. It’s the easy way to make the classic comfort food beef stroganoff.ย
Ground Beef Stroganoff Recipe
I love delicious dinners that my entire family will willingly eat like this ground beef stroganoff recipe. No one in my family likes mushrooms (me included!) but no one even knew there were mushrooms in this beef stroganoff. Thanks to the cream of mushroom soup the mushrooms are hidden but you still get that classic flavor.ย
If you’re looking for all the classic mushroom flavor of beef stroganoff but without the huge chunks of chewy mushrooms then this recipe is a must try!
A creamy mushroom gravy ground beef mixture simmers in one pan while egg noodles cook in another pot. Combine them all together for a yummy dinner that even the kids will love.ย
What You’ll Need
With a few store bought shortcut ingredients you can have this on the table in no time!
- Wide Egg Noodles – You can use either extra wide egg noodles or wide noodles. They are same thing just slightly different sizes and shape of noodle. Make sure you are using the 12 ounce bag. Cook according to package directions and remember to add salt so they have some flavor to them.
- Ground Beef – I use lean 93/7 ground beef but you will drain the fat off anyways so feel free to use whatever ground beef you want.ย
- Onion – I use a yellow onion or a white onion for this recipe.ย
- Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder – Seasonings for the ground beef.ย
- Brown Gravy Mix Packet – Probably the secret ingredient! It helps thicken up the stroganoff sauce and provides so much flavor.
- Sour Cream – The signature ingredient in a beef stroganoff. Provides a lighter color to the creamy sauce.ย
- Cream of Mushroom Soup – I don’t use this ingredient a lot in my cooking but in this recipe it’s so good. With the other added ingredients it really helps perk up the canned mushroom sauce.ย
- Dried Parsley
How to Make Easy Beef Stroganoff with Cream of Mushroom Soup and Ground Beef
Making this dinner recipe is actually easy. All you need is a skillet pan with high sides and a pot to boil the egg noodles in.ย
Start Water Boiling For Pasta : I like to put my pot of water onto the stove top before I start browning the ground beef. This way, by the time the time the ground beef mixture is cooked and simmering, it’s time to add the noodles into the boiling water. This way it’s all done at the same time.ย
Cook Ground Beef : Brown and crumble the ground beef, onion, and seasonings until beef is no longer pink. Drain the excess grease/liquid from the pan.ย
Add Stroganoff Ingredients : Add the brown gravy mixed with water, sour cream, and cream of mushroom soup into the cooked ground beef. Stir and let it come to a low boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 10 minutes while the egg noodles cook.ย
Cook Egg Noodles : Once the meat is simmering throw the egg noodles into the boiling water and cook according to package instructions. Drain the noodles but do not rinse them.ย
Combine : Add cooked egg noodles and dried parsley into the creamy stroganoff mixture and stir it up. It’s ready to serve!
Tips For Success
Here a few helpful tips that will make this recipe a hit in your own home.ย
- Salt The Pasta Water –ย Once the water is boiling be sure and add salt so the noodles have some flavor! I add about 1 teaspoons (maybe slightly more) into the water before I add the dry noodles in.ย
- Don’t Rinse Off The Cooked Egg Noodles –ย No need to rinse the pasta in cold water after draining it. We want the ground beef stroganoff sauce to stick to the noodles so we don’t want to wash off the extra starch.ย
Variation Ideas
There are a few substitutions and ways to change up the recipe. I make it as is, but feel free to try some of these.ย
- Use Ground Turkey : Beef Stroganoff is not traditionally made with ground turkey but if you want to cut some fat and calories from the dish then use 1 pound of ground turkey instead.
- Egg Noodles : There are wide egg noodles, extra wide egg noodles, etc. Any egg noodle will work just make sure it is around the 12 ounces that is called for in the recipe.ย
- Gravy packet : Try a different flavor of gravy packet if you want. Make sure it’s the same size as what is called for.ย
- Cream of Mushroom Soup : If this is something that you don’t want to use then feel free to make your own homemade condensed cream of mushroom soup.ย
Serving Suggestions For Ground Beef Stroganoff
This ground beef stroganoff is almost a complete meal in one. I love to serve this with some kind of vegetable side dish like these slow cooker sweet carrots, oven roasted parmesan brussels sprouts, or this honey butter skillet corn.ย
You could also serve it with some cut up fruit like strawberries, watermelon, mandarin orange segments.ย
Lots of times I will buy a bag of Caesar salad mix at the grocery store and mix that up real quick for an easy side dish to dinner.ย
How To Store and Reheat Leftovers
Store leftovers in a covered container, like a Tupperware, for 3-4 days.ย
Leftovers reheat well in the microwave.ย

Ground Beef Stroganoff
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 small onion finely diced
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ยฝ teaspoon onion powder
- ยฝ teaspoon salt
- ยฝ teaspoon pepper
- 1 packet (0.87 oz) brown gravy mix
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 can (10 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- 1 bag (12 oz) wide egg noodles
Instructions
- ** Fill a pot with water and start it boiling while you cook the ground beef mixture. That way once the meat is ready to simmer, the water is already boiling and you just have to add your egg noodles in.
- In a skillet pan, over medium-high heat, cook and crumble the ground beef, onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt & pepper until ground beef is no longer pink. Drain the excess grease/liquid.
- Whisk together the contents of the gravy packet with the cold water until combined. Pour this into the ground beef.
- Add the sour cream and cream of mushroom soup and stir everything together until combined.
- Let the mixture simmer over medium or medium-low heat while the noodles cook (about 10 minutes).
- Cook noodles according to package instructions. Remember to add about 1 teaspoon of salt to the boiling water so the noodles have flavor. When the noodles are done cooking, drain them but do not rinse them.
- Add the noodles and dried parsley into the creamy ground beef mixture and stir together to combine.
- Serve!

Did You Make This Recipe?
I'd love to see it! You can share it with me on @togetherasfamilyblog and follow on Pinterest @together-as-family-blog-recipes or Facebook @togetherasfamilyblog for more!
Definitely a delicious and easy peasy meal, we threw a piece of bread and butter with it and my husband and kids loved it thanks.
So I just tried this recipe. I however did not have on hand brown gravy. But seen any kind of heavy can be used. I used a poutine gravy instead. All I can say is if the brown gravy made the dish taste even better than mine using the poutine gravy mix this recipe is so delicious. Definitely going to keep this on hand. And going to try it with the brown gravy mix next time.
It was delicious and very easy to prepare! Thanks
We enjoyed it. I added a few tablespoons of cream cheese, some 21 seasoning and Mrs Dash onion and herb seasoning.
I wasnt sure what to do with some ground beef and found this recipe. Didnt disappoint! Delicious with tons of flavour! My family wont eat it due to the onions so i will try without next time but im very happy with tonights results!
Is it okay to use brown gravy in a jar?
I’ve never used that in place of the gravy packet. I really don’t know as I have only ever made the recipe as written. The packet is a dry powder mix and the gravy is like a canned sauce, so my guess is that no it would not work as a substitute.
As long as you eliminate the 1 cup of water used to liquify the gravy packet, I don’t see why a jar of gravy of brown gravy couldn’t be substituted. It should be just fine.
I used homemade gravy and it turned out delicious! It yielded 2 cups but I doubled the recipe. We have 7 in our family and love leftovers!
Yummmm, homemade gravy sounds amazing in this recipe. So glad to hear it was a hit with your family.
The gravy mix and cold water make the gravy for this recipe so I don’t see why you couldn’t use 1 cup of premade gravy from a jar or can..
That’s a good point. I’d love to hear how it works if anyone tries this substitute!
I used the jar gravy and it turned out great!
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
You can use brown gravy in a jar . Just measure out a cup. You can also.use mushroom gravy
I’m sure it’s just fine. Omit the water if you do
This was so easy! The taste was marvelous!! Try this one night when you need a quick dinner!
A salad would go nicely with it. It is very filling.
Thanks for the recipe.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for trying it out.
This was really good. But it makes way more than 6 servings. I had a big portion for dinner, and didn’t make a dent in it. I added a small can of mushrooms. I found it a little spicy, but just a little. I don’t know if I doubled the pepper, or the gravy packet has pepper in it. I have enough for at least 7 more meals. I may try to freeze half.
It was amazing I doubled everything
Love this recipe so simple, easy and delicious!!!!
Thanks Bobbi Jo!
This is my favorite easy beef stroganoff. Lots of flavor with the brown gravy added. I used to make it with just cream of mushroom soup and sour cream but this is way better!
Thank you for your comment. So happy to hear you liked it!
This is a great quick meal. I do like to add 1/4c to 1/2c of milk with the sour cream, makes the dish a bit more creamy.
Mmmmm, I love the idea of making a recipe more creamy! Thanks for sharing!
I have been making a version of this for 30 something yearล. I haven’t used the gravy mix, but will try it. I also put shredded cheddar on top, it’s great.
Awesome, let me know how you like the gravy mix! Love the idea of shredded cheese.
Soooo good! Added a smidge of beef broth to the mix and WOWZA! what a meal. Served with mixed veggies and bread on the side โฆ perfect!
Thank you for your comment! Love to hear that the recipe turned out well for you!
I’ve made this beef stroganoff numerous times. We absolutely love it. Not having a gallbladder white and yellow onions hates me. Whenever I make this beef stroganoff I chop up half of a sweet onion doesn’t bother my GI at all. I made it tonight for dinner I added a portobello mushroom in with my ground beef and onion also I whisked a pack of mushroom gravy and cup of hot water before adding it to my ground beef.
Thank you for a quick and easy fall meal ๐
Iโm glad to hear you were able to figure out a way to make this recipe work for you! Thanks for your comment.
Made this for my family last week and it was a big hit! Delicious! I followed the recipe to a โTโ and it turned out really good and was enough for dinner and lunch the next day. I served it with green peas and garlic bread.
**Tip: when I make this again I would definitely increase the brown gravy and or cream of mushroom soup. Like it a little โsoupierโ
So glad the recipe turned out well for you! I love it when a recipe makes enough for leftovers the next day. Thank you for your comment!
Will this freeze okay?
The cream/dairy in it could separate so it would just need to be stirred well once thawed/heated up.
Made this tonight. The family loved it!
Thanks for the comment Beth! Glad the family liked it!
Would using beef broth, instead of the water in the gravy mix punch up the flavor? or would it be too salty?
It would definitely add flavor, you would probably hold back on adding any salt in the recipe if you were to use beef broth.
I used a dry Ranch seasoning packet because I didnโt have the brown gravy packet. It was so good! Less sodium too which is always a plus!
Love that idea! Thanks for sharing!
What about adding an envelope of beefy onion soup mix instead of the gravy?
I think the flavor would be great! Iโm not sure about the difference in composition between the packets and what that would do to the thickness of the sauce. I think itโs worth a shot though!
Can I use cream of chicken soup and still get a similar flavor? My husband is allergic to mushrooms, but I love stroganoff!
I think the flavor would still be good, you would just miss that hint of mushroom from the soup. Let me know how it turns out!
Great recipe! I used a can of French onion soup in place of the water. So good! Iโll definitely make this recipe again. I also used low carb egg noodles. Yummy
Thatโs a great idea to use the soup in place of the water. Iโm so glad you liked it!
Delicious! I added a cup of beef broth in place of water to the gravy mix. Also sliced mushrooms, I think this is the best recipe by far that I have tried. Will definitely be making it again! Super easy super fast!!! Thanku
Thank you so much! Iโm so happy you liked it.
I made this with cream of chicken soup and mushrooms lol I grabbed the wrong can when shopping, and did 1/4c sour cream and 1/4c cream cheese. Whole cow! So good!
Oh my goodness, I hate that moment when you get home and realize you grabbed the wrong stuff! So glad it still worked out for you!
Delicious! I very rarely buy ground meat but got some on sale. I mixed rather gravy packet with beef stock I had and needed to use up – it was sooo good! Will definitely make again. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment! Iโm so happy to hear you liked it!
I donโt have brown gravy on hand, only pork gravy mixโฆ could that work? I donโt want the flavor profile to be altered
Iโm not super familiar with pork gravy but Iโm guessing that the flavor profile would be very similar.
This is a hit in my house. I use ground turkey & instead of a gravy mix I use Better Than Bouillon with 1 cup water. I also add fresh mushrooms. Makes enough for lunch the next day.
Better than Bouillon is an awesome ingredient! And I love when there are leftovers for the next day!
So my husband says this is one of his favorite dinners now.
We sautรฉed portabella mushrooms in butter and red wine and added those and half a brick is cream cheese to the sauce and omg ๐
Soooooooo good!
this is sooo good! I mean the best I’ve ever made.. thanks
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much!
We love this dish. I add about a tablespoon of Worcestershire. I also add about 1/2 cup milk (as mentioned in a comment) and will probably add some pasta water today because mine is a little thick. Still tastes yummy. Thank you
Thanks for sharing what works for you! So glad you like it!
What can I use if I don’t have any gravy mix?
I would suggest doing a homemade gravy with bouillon.
Made this last night; it was terrific! I did make a few small changes but not so much that I couldn’t judge the original recipe. The gravy mix is the key to punching up the flavor. I think you could also use bouillon in a pinch. I only had 1/2lb ground beef, so I sautรฉed some fresh mushrooms in olive oil and added them. I also had to use a mix of cream cheese+milk instead of sour cream, but it all melted and came together beautifully. Thanks for making a stroganoff recipe that I could make from the pantry/freezer!
Love your point that the recipe can be made from items in most every pantry or freezer! Thanks for your comment!
Delicious! Fast and easy! I used ground turkey and added a few splashes of Worcestershire at the end! Thank you for this recipe!
Absolutely delicious! Instead of doubling the sauce like many comments stated, I just cut back on the noodles (it was more than enough for 2 of us with leftovers). When reheating, I just added a little bit of water to get it the perfect consistency.
Great idea to cut back the noodles! And thank you for sharing your reheating tip!
Made this didnt have egg noodles or cream cheese used heavy cream and used elbow noodles and it was still just fine!
So glad it still worked for you even with the substitutions!
I just finished making this. Great, easy recipe. I wish I could add a picture. It looks just like yours. Followed your recipe but added sliced cremini mushrooms. Loved it! Definitely a keeper recipe.
Thank you for your comment! Iโm sure it looks fabulous!
quick and easy to make for busy person
Iโm glad it was a quick meal for you! Thank you for your comment!
Made tonight using ground turkey but left everything else as recipe calls for. Turned out great. Will add to my dinner rotation!
Love using ground beef recipes with ground turkey! So glad you liked it!
I love to make and eat this recipe. Grew up with it
I love making a recipe I grew up with ๐
Love love loved this!!! Daughter and son (in law) had us over for a spontaneous visit. She whipped up a double batch and asked us to stay. The four of us ate almost all of it!! Delicious!!!!
What a fun, and delicious, visit!
Love this! I grew up feeding this to my children and forgot about it with just my husbands and I, but remembered the flavor of this wonderful dish and found it here! Iโve made it a couple of times and it really comes in handy as a comfort food. We always serve this dish with noodles, but there have been times I served it with mashed potatoes. Truly a keeper.
Love the idea to served it with mashed potatoes. So glad you like the recipe!
Is there anything I can use in place of the instant gravy? Would it come out weird if I were to just make homemade gravy and add it?
Homemade gravy would work fine- just take out the gravy packet and cup of cold water and replace with one cup of gravy.
Wow! Just a delicious and quick week night dinner. Thank you for a simple recipe. My three old gobbled it up ๐
You are so welcome! So happy to hear it was a hit!
This is great comfort food. My husband and I loved it we have had a cooler than usual spring and this fit right in. Anytime is a good time for stroganoff. Tammie
Thank you for sharing, Tammie! Weโve had rainy afternoons which has me craving comfort food!
this was an absolute hit in my house! all 3 kids and husband absolutely loved this! whole pan was gone by end of dinner!
Yay for a successful recipe! Thanks for sharing ๐
My favorite as a kid. This recipe is so close to that.
Love to hear it! ๐ค
Can this be done in the crockpot with the same results?
Iโve never tried it myself but it think it would work well. I would suggest following the directions about cooking the beef with the seasonings/onion, after draining out it into the crockpot with your mixed gravy and the other ingredients. Then cook on low for 3-4 hours.
Let me know how it turns out!
This is amazing. I double the recipe so we can eat on the leftovers for a while.
Great idea! I love when we have leftovers of our favorite meals!
I’ve been making this for years pretty much the same recipe except I put a quart of green beans that I canned in it. This way you have veggies too and it is really good to.
Love the idea of adding veggies! Thanks for sharing!
Loved this recipe , followed it, just added some frozen peas @ the very end. Also added some mushrooms. Will definitely make this again. Thanks Terry
Love the additions you made! Thanks for commenting.
Terry, I will be adding fresh mushrooms next time as well!
I did not have a packet of powdered gravy so I substituted Lipton’s dry onion soup mix with some tapioca starch added. This was delicious! My family loved it and we will definitely be making it again. Easy and quick, just how I love recipes.
That sounds perfect! So glad it worked out and your family loved it!
It was great! I added a half of block of cream cheese. Delicious
Yum! I bet it was extra creamy and delicious! Thanks for sharing.
Great recipe! Only thing I did different…I added a can of rinsed/drained mushrooms, and 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire Sauce. Delicious!
Sounds like a fun way to change it up! Thanks for sharing.
This was very easy and delicious.
Thank you!
i made this today but I didn’t use 12 oz of noodles, I used like 7 oz. turned out good because I like to have more leftover meat sauce. this recipe was really good, really creamy and the flavors came out really nice.
Thank you for your comment and review!
I forgot the gravy mix when I bought groceries, so I used 4 beef bullion cubes instead. I also added a tablespoon of garlic powder and fresh mushrooms. My husband loved it! What he didnโt eat for dinner he ate for breakfast!
I love the substitutions you used and the ingredients you added. Thank you for your comment and review!
Can you use AuJus gravy instead of just a gravy packet ?
That should work, just make sure you have 1 cup of gravy.
I needed a quick easy meal with ground burger and this was SUPER easy! It was so good. My belly hurt because I ate way too much.
I added a teaspoon of both garlic and onion powder.
Iโm so glad the recipe helped you when you were in a pinch! ๐๐ป
Super easy and a big hit with the kids!
Wonderful! Kids can be the toughest critics ๐
So easy and delicious. Will make again. My husband loved it
So glad to hear it! Thanks for commenting!
This was so good! My husband and father loved it! Definitely a saver! Thank you so much!
Youโre welcome! Iโm glad it was a hit. ๐
its was easy and fast not forgetting it was delicious… thanks for share your recipe..
Thank you for your kind words. Iโm so glad you liked the recipe!
This recipe is awesome, I absolutely loved the flavor of course, you gotta add some of your own little seasoning. My husband usually likes things a little spicy so I added a little bit more pepper but it was so delicious. I will be making this again.
I love hearing how people make recipes their own! Thank you for commenting ๐ค
Super easy and sooo good!! Will be saving for sure!
Wonderful, happy to hear it is โsaverโ status.
Thank you for sharing this recipe! It was super easy to make! And loved by all!
You are so welcome! Iโm glad it was loved ๐ฅฐ
So easy!! My go to dinner!!
Thank you! I love when people find their โgo-toโ dinners on the blog.
This was delicious! I had to make one change as I didn’t have gravy mix on hand. I did have beef stock, so I whisked a little bit of flour in one cup of stock and eliminated the water listed. Because I love mushrooms, (๐) I added a can but chopped them up a bit first. Husband gave a thumbs up which means I can add it to the rotation! Woohoo! Thank you for posting this recipe!!! ๐๐
I love all the changes and that you were able to make it work with what you had. Thank you for letting me know!
Definitely added to our rotation! Whole family enjoyed as in not making multiple meals lol. Ate whole thing! No leftovers ๐ Now have to make lunches since those are gone. Easy, simple, yummy!
This is so great! I am so happy to hear it was a hit. My family loves this one also.
Tasty, quick and easy to do!
Yummy!!
Iโve had trouble with some โeasyโ stroganoff recipes in the past, but this one worked great and tasted wonderful!
Yay! So glad this one worked for you.
This meal was super good and super easy. We loved it and canโt wait to eat the leftovers. Will make again!! Thank you.
This is a five star recipe. it’s the perfect amount to feed my kid. I want more recipes.๐ and yes The steps to this meal is easy peasy lemon squeezy.
It was such a great recipe! I paired it with sweet peas and garlic knots. I always loved stroganoff flavor of hamburger helper so making it from scratch is now my go to! The only thing i would add for me is doubling the cream sauce. I love mine creamy but still delicious.
