Easy Cherry Cobbler Recipe (Sugar Cookie Cobbler)
If you’re looking for an easy dessert recipe, with shortcut ingredients and easy prep, then this easy cherry cobbler is for you!
Only 3 ingredients needed to make this easy cherry cobbler with a sugar cookie crumble over top. Juicy warm cherries topped with a sweet crunchy cobbler topping, and served with a scoop of cool and creamy vanilla ice cream.
With only a 5 minute prep time, you know this is going to be an easy dessert that is ready in no time.
Ingredients Needed (Only 3 Ingredients!)
- Cherry Pie Filling
- Sugar Cookie Mix – This is a bag of dried cookie mix that can be found in the baking aisle next to the cake mixes and muffin mixes. It’s not the refrigerated log looking thing of prepared, ready-to-use cookie dough. We just want the dry cookie mix.
- Melted Butter – I recommend using salted butter in this recipe.
How To Make Sugar Cookie Cherry Cobbler with Canned Cherry Pie Filling
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Dump the cherry pie filling into a 9×13 baking pan and spread it into an even layer.
- In a mixing bowl, add the dry sugar cookie mix and melted butter. Stir to combine until it forms a crumbly mixture.
- Evenly sprinkle the sugar cookie topping over top the cherries.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the cherry pie filling is bubbly.
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream over top.
Can I Make This Easy Cherry Cobbler With Fresh or Frozen Cherries?
No, I do not recommend using frozen cherries or fresh cherries. I have tested this cherry cobbler out using both fresh and frozen, and each time it ends up a soupy mess. The cherries will give off too much liquid and not even adding cornstarch helped. I recommend going the quick & easy route and just using canned cherry pie filling.
I’m one of those weird people that actually likes the canned pie filling. It tastes yummy, makes recipes so easy and simple to make, and there are so many different flavors to choose from.
Serving Suggestions For Easy Cherry Cobbler
We think this is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top. The creamy, cold ice cream melts into the warm and sweet dessert. It really is so yummy. Similar to a Dump Cake, Crisp, or Cobbler.
Other great serving ideas are making some homemade whipped cream, or use a spray can or Cool Whip, and top each serving with whipped cream. For an extra sweet dessert, drizzle some chocolate syrup over top.
Can I Make Changes To This Recipe?
Yes, this recipe is a very versatile base recipe which means that there are lots of different variations that can be made. Here are some ideas.
- Use a Cake Mix : If you’d rather, try using an variety of cake mix instead of the sugar cookie mix. Use a standard 15 ounce cake mix if using it in the recipe. You can use chocolate, vanilla, white, French vanilla, strawberry, chocolate fudge, etc. I do recommend sticking with the sugar cookie mix because after testing this recipe, the sugar cookie mix was far better tasting than a cake mix.
- Pie Filling : Any pie filling can be used in the recipe. Lots of options from apple, mixed berry, strawberry, blueberry, or blackberry.
- Add Chopped Nuts : For a crunch and added texture try adding some finely chopped almond, pecans, or walnuts.
- Cookie Mix : This is the bag of dried cookie mix that can be found by the cake mixes and muffin mixes at the store. You could use any variety or flavor that you want – chocolate chip, snickerdoodle (mix the sugar packet in with the cookie mix and butter), oatmeal chocolate chips, or chocolate fudge.
Recipe Tips
- Storing Leftovers : Leftovers are best stored at room temperature, covered, for up to 2-3 days. Although, this dessert is best served right after it’s made. My family doesn’t love the leftovers of this dessert as the sugar cookie cobbler tends to dry out. I recommend heating up a serving of the leftovers in the microwave. For serving guests or your family, I recommend only making it right before serving it. Serve warm from the oven for best taste.
- Serve With Ice Cream : The best, and really the only way (in my opinion), to serve cherry cobbler is with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream! So yummy with the melty creamy texture of the ice cream, the juicy cherries, and sweet sugar cookie cobbler topping.
