Crock Pot Chicken Cordon Bleu Recipe (Delicious Meal For A Busy Weeknight)
This crockpot chicken cordon bleu casserole is a family favorite that is always a crowd pleaser! Classic chicken cordon bleu gets a slow cooker twist with layers of creamy sauce, tender chicken breasts, melty Swiss cheese, slices of ham, and a buttery herb stuffing topping.
It’s an easy meal for dinner that can be prepared ahead of time and then let the slow cooker do all the work for a comfort food dinner.
Ingredients Needed
- Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
- Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup
- Cream Cheese
- Milk – Use any percentage fat milk you have. I prefer using a higher fat milk like whole milk when any baking or cooking recipe calls for milk.
- Garlic Powder
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts
- Deli Ham Slices – Any variety of ham can be used like honey ham, Black Forest ham, brown sugar ham. I prefer to go to the deli counter and ask for slices of ham, but you can also purchase prepared and ready-to-eat deli ham from the refrigerated area of the store as well.
- Sliced Swiss Cheese
- Herb Stuffing Mix – This is the dry stuffing mix that comes in a box. You can also substitute with your favorite flavor stuffing mix if you prefer a different one.
- Butter
How To Make This Slow Cooker Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Recipe (Printable Recipe Card Below)
In a mixing bowl, add the mushroom and chicken condensed cream soup, milk, cream cheese, and garlic powder. Stir together until combined well and it forms a creamy sauce. Spread a small amount of the soup mixture into the bottom of the crockpot insert (about 1/3 cup of it).
Layer chicken breasts in a single layer over top the soup layer inside the crockpot.
Layer the ham slices over top of the chicken followed by the Swiss cheese slices. Make sure to try to cover the chicken breasts completely with the ham and cheese slices.
Pour the remaining soup mixture evenly over the layered chicken, ham, and cheese.
Sprinkle the dry herb stuffing mix evenly over the soup layer. Drizzle the melted butter over the stuffing, making sure to moisten it as much as possible. The goal is to distribute the butter evenly for the perfectly moistened stuffing.
Cover the crockpot with the lid and cook on LOW heat for 4-6 hours until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
Once cooked, turn off the heat to the slow cooker (or place it on the WARM setting) and let it sit for 5-8 minutes to allow the stuffing to set. I like to tilt the lid which helps the excess moisture to escape while the stuffing sets.
How To Store Leftovers
Any leftover chicken cordon bleu should be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, and eaten within 3 days. To reheat, warm up the leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes. Or microwave in short intervals until heated through. If using the microwave, I always recommend adding just a small amount of water or chicken broth to keep things moist while reheating.
What Are Some Substitutions I Can Make?
- Creamed Soup : Substitute either the chicken or mushroom cream of soup with your favorite variety; such as cream of celery, cream of onion, cream of chicken with herbs, or substitute with Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup.
- Sliced Cheese : Sliced gruyere cheese, mozzarella cheese, muenster cheese, or provolone cheese are all great substitutes for the Swiss cheese.
- Stuffing Mix : Use any flavor variety of stuffing mix you prefer. There are lots of options at the store if you want to change this up. I love the herb flavor which is why the recipe calls for it.
What Should I Serve With Chicken Cordon Bleu?
- Steamed Vegetables – Use frozen vegetables or fresh vegetables for a light & healthy side dish option. Green beans, corn, asparagus, or broccoli are all great options.
- Roasted Vegetables – Try serving up some Roasted Parmesan Potatoes or Roasted Red Potatoes for a heartier side dish option.
- Garden Green Salad – Buy a bagged salad mix and add some fresh veggies like cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, and shredded carrots. Serve with your favorite salad dressing or vinaigrette. You could also make my Company Green Salad for a delicious mix to traditional green salad.
- Mashed Potatoes – Creamy mashed potatoes compliment the richness of the casserole. Try these Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes.
- Rice Pilaf – Buy a box of rice pilaf mix from the store or try making it yourself with this easy Rice Pilaf Recipe.
- French Bread or Rolls – This is a great option for soaking up all that extra creamy sauce!
Recipe FAQ’s
Is It Necessary To Use Two Different Creamed Soups?
Using two different soups adds depth of flavor and I do recommend using two different varieties.
Can I use Frozen Chicken Breasts?
I do not recommend using frozen chicken breasts in this recipe. When frozen chicken thaws and cooks, it gives off some liquid (from the thawing) which can interfere with the creamy sauce and could possibly make the stuffing too mushy and soft. If all you have is frozen chicken, then I suggest letting it thaw in the fridge overnight before using. I prefer using fresh chicken breasts purchased from the store.
How Do I Know When The Chicken Is Fully Cooked?
The chicken is done, and at a safe temperature, when an instant read thermometer reads 165 degrees F. Check the temperature of each chicken breast before turning off the heat and serving it.
Can I Cook It On High Heat In The Crock Pot?
Yes, you can cook this on HIGH heat for 2-3 hours but I recommend only cooking on LOW heat. Low & slow is the best way to go when it comes to slow cooking in the crockpot.
