Homemade Spaghetti Meat Sauce

Ditch the canned spaghetti sauce for this flavorful, beefy, homemade spaghetti sauce. Only takes a few minutes  to prepare and then let it simmer for amazing flavor!

Our heat pump & a/c unit died yesterday……. call me spoiled or whatever you want, but I cannot live without air conditioning. It’s pathetic really. I have tons to do, kids to take care of, laundry to wash and fold, floor to mop, people to call, bills to pay, etc. and all I can do is whine about it being too hot. I need some motivation here, please! My poor husband. I have been texting him all day at work…..

“It’s SO hot in here!”

“I can’t do anything but lay here and whine.”

“Call someone to come out here now!”

“I can’t stand it anymore!”

And along with that I have been giving him temperature updates, “it’s now 80 degrees in the house……” etc. He is totally awesome, and puts up with a lot 🙂

So, he comes home from work and the house is scorching hot and we are all miserable and complaining. And you know what he does?! He walks downstairs, looks at all that stuff for a few minutes, comes upstairs and says, “Um, the breaker was tripped. It’s working now.”

What! We just suffered all day and I could have just flipped the breaker switch (I honestly don’t even know what that is, but it sounds easy enough….). Which, by the way, I am adding that to my to-do list; must learn about breaker switches 🙂 What would I do without him?!?

Moving on to this glorious meaty spaghetii sauce. I love the convenience of a canned product. But, sometimes I love it even more when I can make something from scratch and have it turn out completely amazing. Like this stuff. You just brown some ground beef, or ground turkey if you would rather, and then add a bunch of delicious stuff and let it simmer. You need, at the very least, 10-15 minutes of time to let it all simmer together on the stove. I always do it for longer because the flavor develops more and it is so rich and flavorful.

 Boil up some pasta noodles and then pile on this delicious and hearty spaghetti sauce. Don’t forget the shredded parmesan cheese. It’s a must, really! I served this alongside these Parmesan Breadsticks I posted yesterday; these breadsticks were life changing. For me anyways. Enjoy friends 🙂

Homemade Meaty Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium size sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes w/ garlic, oregano, and basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • freshly ground black pepper, equal to about 1/4 teaspoon
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Cook ground beef, onion, garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon salt over medium-high heat until the meat is no longer pink.
  2. Drain the grease from the meat mixture.
  3. Add in the remaining ingredients, stir together and let it simmer on low-medium heat for at least 15 minutes, longer if you can. If it starts to boil and spit sauce, just turn the heat down.
  4. Serve over cooked pasta.

Notes

* I am super picky about how greasy my ground beef is, so I put a metal colander in the sink and then put the beef mixture in it to drain the fat. I then wipe out the pot with some paper towel, and then return the beef mixture to the pot. This is not necessary, but it does yield a non-greasy pasta sauce, which I am a fan of.

    Ugh! I can’t live without air conditioning either! Good thing it was an easy fix. This looks delicious. If you’d like to deliver a plate of spaghetti and some of those breadsticks, I would gladly accept!

      I know! I’m just glad we did not have to end up replacing it completely. Hello tons of money $ !!! I would totally deliver a plate if I could 🙂 Between my family, my parents visiting and my husband taking the leftovers to work the next day, we have none left!

    I like homemade spaghetti sauce, so much better than any can or jar. By the way, use 96-97% fat free meat and no grease or fat to worry about or drain! Trust me, I’m frugal and pay the extra willingly, worth the extra pennies.

    Great recipe! Take it to a whole other level with ground italian sausage. Sometimes I change it up for a little variety. Both ways are so good.

    Can’t wait to try this. I always boil my hamburger meat. That way it gets all the grease off. I also cook and put it in the freezer if I buy when on sale. It’s perfect for spaghetti sauce, tacos, etc.

    I just made this today and it was a hit! Couldn’t find any Italian style diced tomatoes so I just got regular diced tomatoes and put some Italian seasoning in it. Added some parsley at the end and it was to die for! So easy, quick and delicious and not too many ingredients needed! Thank you so much!

      Hi Amber. I’m so glad you loved this! This is one that I still make often. Great idea about the diced tomato + Italian Seasoning. I actually need to change the recipe because they no longer label the diced tomatoes ‘Italian Style’. They call them ‘diced tomatoes with garlic, oregano, and basil’.
