Cheesy Baked Tortellini Casserole
This pasta casserole with tortellini and marinara sauce is a comforting casserole, and easy dinner recipe, that the whole family will love!
It’s perfect for those busy weeknights because it only needs a few minutes of prep, with really simple ingredients (most of them are convenient store-bought ready to use items).
Ingredient List For Cheesy Tortellini Casserole
- Cheese Tortellini : You can use frozen tortellini, fresh tortellini, or shelf-stable tortellini (dried tortellini that you find by the pasta). Feel free to also use any variety of tortellini that you want; cheese-filled tortellini, spinach, sausage, etc.
- Ground Beef : I use lean 93/7 ground beef.
- Seasoned Salt
- Garlic Powder
- Marinara Sauce : A 24 ounce jar of marinara sauce – also called pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce. Again, use your favorite variety. I prefer using a classic marinara sauce such as tomato & basil or marinara sauce.
- Garlic and Fine Herbs Boursin Cheese : This is the “secret ingredient” and makes this cheesy tortellini bake taste amazing. You will find the Boursin cheese up near the other specialty cheese in the deli/produce section of the grocery store. Cream cheese is another substitute if needed.
- Mozzarella Cheese : 8 ounces is what the recipe calls for. I recommend buy an 8 ounce block of cheese and shredding it yourself using a box cheese grater. You can also buy an 8 ounce bag of pre-shredded mozzarella cheese if that’s what you prefer for easier prep.
How to Make Easy Cheesy Baked Tortellini (Printable Recipe Card)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray. Set aside.
Cook the tortellini according to the package directions.
In a large skillet pan, over medium-high heat, cook and crumble the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain the excess liquid/grease from the pan.
Add the seasoned salt and garlic powder, and stir until all the ground beef is coated in the seasonings.
Stir in the marinara sauce and Boursin cheese. Continue to cook until all the cheese has been melted and incorporated into the sauce (about 5 minutes).
Add the cooked tortellini into the skillet pan, and gently stir everything together to coat the tortellini in the sauce and meat mixture.
Evenly spread the contents of the skillet pan into the prepared casserole pan. Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over top.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the casserole is bubbly.
How To Store Leftovers
Baked tortellini should be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to 4-5 days. To reheat, you can place the casserole back into the oven at 350 degrees, covered with foil, for 10-15 minutes. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave until heated through.
What Are Some Substitutions I Can Make?
- Tortellini : Use cheese tortellini, sausage, ricotta cheese, or spinach filled tortellini. Any variety will work. I have also successfully used ravioli when I have not had tortellini on had.
- Ground Beef : Ground turkey, ground mild Italian sausage or ground chicken will all work well as substitutes in the recipe for the ground beef.
- Marinara Sauce : You can also use an Alfredo sauce base instead, or use any variety of pasta sauce/spaghetti sauce/marinara sauce that you love.
- Boursin Cheese : Try using a different flavor of Boursin cheese; such as shallot, caramelized onion, or basil and chive.
- Seasonings : I love the seasoned salt + garlic powder combo in this casserole but feel free to add whatever you want; Italian seasoning, onion powder, basil, etc.
Serving Suggestions
My family loves this tortellini casserole served with some parmesan cheese that they can sprinkle on top, with garlic bread, and a green garden salad. Try my Cheesy Garlic Bread or Easy Garlic Parmesan Knots. You can also pick up some bakery breadsticks or garlic bread, or buy some frozen stuff and bake it according to the package directions.
Recipe FAQ’s
Can I Add Vegetables To The Tortellini Casserole?
Yes, if wanted, try adding some finely chopped onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, or spinach into the ground beef either while it’s cooking or afterwards when it’s simmering with the sauce.
Can I Make It Spicy?
To add some heat to the dish, you can use a spicy marinara sauce, add cayenne pepper while cooking, and/or use red pepper flakes as a garnish.
Should I Use Frozen, Fresh, or Dried Tortellini?
Either one will work so use whatever you have. Frozen tortellini tends to hold its shape better once cooked but I have used all three kinds with great results.
Can I Make It Vegetarian?
For a vegetarian version of this tortellini casserole, make sure you omit the ground beef and use a cheese or mushroom-filled tortellini. Also, check the marinara sauce and make sure you are using a vegetation version of pasta sauce.
How Can I Tell When My Tortellini Is Done Cooking?
When cooking the tortellini in the large pot of boiling water, look for them to float to the top of the water once they are done cooking. That’s an easy way to know if they’re done or not. It only takes a few minutes to cook tortellini.
