Easy Crockpot Chicken and Gravy Recipe

This crock pot chicken and gravy recipe is a great recipe for an easy weeknight meal – it only calls for a handful of easy ingredients, it takes minimal effort to prepare, and the slow cooker does all the work for you!

My whole family loves this chicken and gravy served over cooked white rice. But you can also serve it over mashed potatoes as well for pure comfort food for these colder winter months.

Simple Ingredients Needed

  1. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
  2. Garlic Powder
  3. Onion Powder
  4. Salt & Black Pepper : This is optional depending on preference. I sprinkle some salt and pepper on the chicken to season them. The longer slow cook time does tend to mute flavors which is why I add just a touch as called for in the recipe. If you’re watching sodium intake then simply leave out the salt and it will still be delicious.
  5. Water : You need 21 ounces of water which is equal to two of the cream of chicken soup cans. Empty the can of cream of chicken soup  into the crockpot and then fill it up two times with water to equal 21 ounces needed.
  6. Cream of Chicken Soup : You could use a can of cream of chicken with herbs or try using cream of mushroom soup for a slightly different flavor profile.
  7. Packets of Chicken Gravy Mix : These are the gravy packets that you will find with the other seasoning packets at the grocery store. It’s specifically labeled as ‘chicken gravy’ and you need two of them for this easy slow cooker recipe.

How Should I Store Leftover Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy?

  • Refrigerator : Transfer any leftovers into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, you can use a pot on the stove top to heat until heated through, or microwave individual portions.
  • Freezer : If you have lots of leftovers and want to get another meal out of it, transfer the leftover chicken and gravy into a freezer-safe Ziploc bag or container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight. Reheat in the slow cooker (on LOW heat for 3-4 hours), or on the stove top.
  • Freezer Meal : Place the raw chicken breast into a gallon sized Ziploc bag. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining ingredients (seasonings, water, cream of chicken soup, and chick gravy mix powder). Pour it over the chicken inside the ziplock bag. Seal the bag while removing the excess air. Freeze for up to 3-4 months. You can cook from frozen in the crockpot (add about 1 hour to the cook time), or let it thaw in the fridge overnight and cook as directed in the recipe.

What Should I Serve With Chicken and Gravy?

  • Mashed Potatoes : Serve the rich gravy sauce and tender chicken over some Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes, Crockpot Mashed Potatoes, or Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes for the ultimate comfort food dinner.
  • Rice : Serve this easy chicken recipe over some cooked white rice, brown rice, and cauliflower rice. I love making this recipe for Oven Baked Brown Rice. The rice soaks up the gravy mixture and it’s so yummy! My family loves rice with this recipe.
  • Corn Casserole : This Corn Casserole is a great side dish because it’s hearty and can soak up some of that gravy.
  • Sautéed Vegetables : Cook up frozen vegetables like green beans, corn, or carrots.
  • Roasted Vegetables : These Parmesan Roasted Potatoes are really yummy with this chicken and gravy. Serve the chicken and gravy over the potatoes or as a side dish.

Recipe FAQ’s

Can I Use Chicken Broth Instead of Water?

Yes, you can! If using chicken broth I would recommend leaving out the salt when you season the chicken.

Can I Add Frozen Vegetables To It?

If wanted, add a bag of frozen vegetables into the crockpot after you pour the gravy mix over top the chicken. Green beans, carrots & corn, are all great options if wanted.

How Do I Keep It From Tasting Too Salty?

The prepare ingredients like cream of chicken soup and the chicken gravy packets do already contain quite a bit of salt. If you’re worried about it tasting too salt, don’t add any additional salt when you season the chicken. The recipe also calls for water which will help cut the salt in the other ingredients. Remember, that the chicken is bland and it does need some flavor and the cook time is several hours long. The slow cooker does tend to mute flavors because of the longer cook time, so I make the recipe as is and my family has never had a problem with it being salty.

Do I Need To Prepare The Gravy Packets?

No, do not prepare the gravy according to the instructions on the back of the packet. Just use the dry chicken gravy powder from the packet.

Can I Use Other Cuts of Chicken?

Yes, you can! Feel free to use boneless, skinless chicken thighs for a juicy chicken. You can also use frozen chicken breasts (you may need to cook it for the full 8 hours if using frozen chicken), and you can even use chicken tenderloins if that’s what you have.
