Simple Ingredients For Pickle Roll-Ups

You only need 4 ingredients for these deliciously addicting bite-sized appetizers. You won’t believe how easy they are to make with just a few minutes of prep time.

  1. Whole Dill Pickles : The tangy pickle pairs perfectly with the creamy cream cheese and salty ham. You want to make sure you are using a larger sized whole pickle so that it can fit across the slice of ham.
  2. Deli Ham Slices : Buy the packaged refrigerated ham slices (like the ones you would buy for sandwiches) or go to the deli counter and ask for freshly sliced ham. I highly recommend using the freshly sliced deli counter ham; it tastes so much better! Use Black Forest ham, honey ham, ham, or brown sugar ham. Whichever you prefer.
  3. Cream Cheese : Use a block of cream, cream cheese spread in the container, or whipped cream cheese. You could even get real fancy and use a flavored cream cheese spread. For easier spreading make sure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature before using.
  4. Ranch Seasoning Mix : You only need 1 tablespoon of the ranch seasoning mix. There will be leftover if you are using a packet of ranch seasoning.

Substitution & Variation Ideas

  • Spread : Instead of plain cream cheese try using pimento cheese or a flavored cream cheese.
  • Meat Slices : Instead of ham use your favorite sliced deli turkey, roast beef, salami, prosciutto or other favorite deli meat.
  • Pickles : I recommend sticking with the dill pickles but there are other options that can be used such as sweet pickles or baby gherkin pickles.
  • Reduced-Fat Cream Cheese : Make it lighter and use the reduced-fat cream cheese instead of full fat.

Can I Make Them Ahead of Time?

Yes you can prepare the appetizer ahead of time, but I don’t recommend making it more than 1 to 2 hours ahead of time. I love these roll-ups after they have been in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour. They don’t keep well for an extended period of time because the ham and pickle will give off some liquid as they sit in the fridge. So for best results prepare them no more than 1-2 hours ahead of when you’re serving them.

Tips For Making This Perfect Make Ahead Appetizer

  • Dry Pickles : It’s so important that the pickles are dry prior to rolling them in the cream cheese mixture and ham slices. If you just grab them right out of the jar, chances are is that they will be too wet to stick to the cream cheese. I recommend laying out a paper towel and laying the 10 pickles on it. Then use the excess paper towel to dab the pickles dry.
  • Clean Easy Slices : I recommend refrigerating the pickle roll-ups for 30 minutes prior to slicing for the best, easy, and clean slices. They can be sliced and served right away, but they’re much better and easier to slice once they have had refrigeration time.
  • Softened Cream Cheese : Don’t forget to put the cream cheese out on the countertop, at room temperature, for 1 hour prior to starting. You want the cream cheese softened to make it more spreadable.
  • Serving Tip : Serve the roll-ups on cocktail toothpicks or small skewer sticks for easy eating. The roll-ups can be served right away OR refrigerate them for 1-2 hours for a chilled appetizer.
