Easy Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
If you love chicken cordon bleu but don’t love pounding chicken, rolling ham, breading, frying, and cleaning up all the mess… this casserole is about to be your dinnertime favorite.
This easy recipe for chicken cordon bleu casserole has everything we crave from the classic dish – tender shredded chicken, savory ham, melty Swiss cheese, and a creamy sauce – without any of the fuss.
It’s a dump-and-bake casserole recipe, with means it’s perfect for busy weeknights, gatherings, easy to transport, something the whole family loves, or anytime you want pure comfort food with all the drama and hassle.

Why You’ll Love This Casserole
- No breading or frying
- Uses simple, easy-to-find ingredients
- Make-ahead and freezer-friendly (unbaked or baked)
- A dump-and-bake dinnertime prep recipe

Simple Ingredients Needed
- Shredded Chicken : This is a great recipe to use leftover chicken in, grab a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store, or I like to throw a few chicken breasts into the slow cooker with some chicken broth (or chicken stock) and cook on LOW heat for 6-7 hours. It’s perfectly shreddable and ready to use when it’s time to prep this casserole for dinner.
- Sour Cream
- Whole Milk : I higher fat milk is the best to use so the sauce is thick and creamy. Lower-fat milks will make the sauce thinner.
- Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup
- Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Paprika
- Ham : You can use sliced deli ham, chopped ham, or cut the slices of ham into smaller pieces. Grab some fresh sliced ham from the deli meat counter for the best flavor, or grab the convenient packaged sliced ham in whatever one you prefer.
- Sliced Swiss Cheese
- Crushed Ritz Crackers
- Butter : The butter will be melted to make the buttery ritz cracker topping for the casserole.

How To Make This Easy Chicken Casserole Recipe (Printable Recipe Card)
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 9×13 casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, stir together the shredded chicken, sour cream, milk, cream of chicken soup, and dried seasonings until well combined. Transfer the mixture into the casserole dish and spread it out evenly.

Sprinkle the ham (or lay the ham slices) over top, and then layer the slices of Swiss cheese on top of the ham.
In a small bowl, mix together the crushed Ritz crackers and melted butter until evenly combined and the mixture resembles wet sand. Spread the cracker mixture over top the cheese slices in an even layer.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

How To Store Leftover Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
Any leftover casserole should be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for 3 to 4 days. You can also leave the casserole leftovers inside the baking dish and cover it with a lid or cover it tightly with plastic wrap.
To reheat, place single servings in the microwave for 30-45 seconds at a time until warm. For larger portions, reheat in the oven at 350°F for 15-20 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
To freeze, place completely cooled leftovers in a freezer-safe airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Let thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating for serving.

Serving Suggestions
I normally serve some Roasted Parmesan Potatoes, or these Parmesan Roasted Sweet Potatoes, as a side dish to this casserole. You could also serve it alongside some vegetables of your choice; such as green beans or carrots. A green salad is also a great side dish option. Or try serving it alongside some Rice Pilaf.
Or you can go with a sweeter side dish like Pear Jello, Mandarin Orange Pretzel Salad, or these Maple Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potatoes.

Substitutions & Ingredient Notes
- Shredded Chicken : Make sure you are using cooked chicken. Use up leftover chicken from another meal, grab a rotisserie chicken from the store, or you can cook and shred chicken specifically for this recipe (use the slow cooker or boil it on the stove top). I don’t recommend using canned chicken, or ready to use prepared chicken packs from the store, as it can be very salty and contain excess water that might dilute the casserole as it cooks. I know Costco sells a package of already shredded rotisserie chicken that would work well in this casserole.
- Cream of Chicken Soup : For those traditional chicken cordon bleu flavors I recommend sticking with classic cream of chicken soup. However, if wanted, you could use any variety of condensed creamed soup.
- Ham : You can buy chopped ham that is ready to use, use ham slices from the package or deli counter, or cut the slices into smaller pieces if wanted.
- Swiss Cheese : Mozzarella or provolone are other options, but Swiss cheese will give you those traditional cordon bleu flavors. I prefer using sliced cheese but you could also use shredded Swiss cheese if wanted.

Recipe FAQs
Can I Make This Ahead of Time?
You can prepare the casserole up to 24 hours before baking and serving. Prepare it up to the step of adding the Ritz cracker topping so it doesn’t become soggy. Cover the casserole dish and store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake. When ready to bake, add the buttery cracker topping on top of the casserole and bake according to the recipe instructions. This same method also works if you want to freeze the casserole, unbaked, for a freezer meal.
What Kind Of Ham Should I Use In This Casserole?
Diced ham can be bough already diced and packaged. You could also go to the deli counter and get some thick sliced ham of choice and dice it yourself. Or get thin sliced ham and layer the ham sliced in the casserole. Or ask for shredded ham and use shred. Another option is to use packaged lunch ham and either use the slices or chop it up smaller.
What Shredded Chicken Should I Use?
Use up leftover chicken from another meal. Purchase a package of shredded chicken that’s ready to use – Costco has a shredded rotisserie chicken pack. You can boil chicken breasts in some chicken broth on the stove top, or put it in the slow cooker on LOW heat for about 6-7 hours. I like to use two forks to easily shred the chicken, or you could use a handheld mixer to shred it. I prefer using two fork because then I can keep the pieces in larger shreds. I don’t recommend using canned chicken or the packaged ready-to-eat chicken as it’s usually salt with some sort of preservative in it that can alter the taste in this casserole slightly.
