Oven Baked Pizza Chicken Recipe
Pizza chicken bake is a low carb and easy meal, that’s full of all your favorite pizza toppings like crispy & spicy pepperoni, melted gooey mozzarella and parmesan cheese, and an Italian seasoning blend of dried spices.
One baking dish is all it takes to make this delicious twist to a pepperoni pizza.
Simple Ingredients Needed
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts : Cut each chicken breast in half lengthwise, so you end up with two thinner pieces per breast. This helps the chicken cook faster and more evenly.
- Italian Seasoning
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Kosher Salt & Black Pepper
- Pizza Sauce : This is just a store-bought container of pizza sauce. You can use canned, homemade pizza sauce, or grab some fresh pizza sauce from the deli area of the grocery store for a fresher flavor.
- Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
- Shredded Parmesan Cheese : I recommend using the shelf-stable grated parmesan cheese that comes in the can with the green lid. Fresh parmesan cheese tends to burn in the oven, which makes it not ideal in this recipe.
- Sliced Pepperoni
How To Make Pizza Chicken Bake (Printable Recipe Card)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
Cut each chicken breast in half, horizontally or lengthwise, so you end up with two thinner pieces of chicken per breast. Place the chicken into the prepared baking dish. If needed, use a rimmed cookie sheet for more room.
In a small bowl, stir together the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the seasoning mix on both sides of each chicken breast, saving about 1 teaspoon of the seasoning mix for later.
Spread the pizza sauce over the top of the chicken. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, and remaining seasoning mix over the top of the sauce. Arrange the slices of pepperoni over the cheese.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese has melted and the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.
What Are Substitutions I Can Make?
- Chicken Breast : For a juicy chicken try using chicken thighs instead.
- Pizza Sauce : Marinara sauce, pasta sauce, or spaghetti sauce will all work in this recipe. It’s also a great way to switch it up! Use mini meatball pasta sauce for even more meat in the dish. Use a chunky vegetable pasta sauce for a veggies boost. Or use a cheesy spaghetti sauce for a cheesy version of this pizza bake.
- Pepperoni : Turkey pepperoni, mini pepperoni, or regular sized pepperoni will all work. You could even use some cooked & crumbled ground sausage in place of the pepperoni or in addition to the pepperoni.
- Mozzarella Cheese & Parmesan Cheese : Use a pizza blend of shredded cheese, an Italian blend of shredded cheese, shredded Pepper Jack cheese for some spice, or Colby Jack is another great option.
How To Store Leftover Pizza Chicken
Pizza chicken leftovers should be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to 4 days.
- How To Reheat Leftovers : Using an air fryer, heat chicken at 375 degrees for 3-4 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165 degrees F. If using a microwave, place the pizza chicken on a microwave-safe plate, and heat for 2-5 minutes. If using the oven, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the chicken in an oven-safe baking dish, add 1/4 cup water or chicken broth into the baking dish, cover with foil, and heat for 10-15 minutes or until heated through to a safe internal temperature. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes for a crisper chicken.
What To Serve With This Chicken Pizza Recipe
- Green Salad : A green salad mix, or caesar salad mix, is a great side dish to pizza. You can buy a ready-to-use salad mix bag that comes complete with the topping and dressing. Or, buy a bag of salad greens and add all your favorite veggies, and then finish it off with your favorite salad dressing. I love making my Homemade Ranch Dressing when we have a green salad at the dinner table.
- Garlic Bread : This is a classic side dish for any pasta or pizza dish.
- Roasted Vegetables
- Jalapeño Poppers, Onion Rings, or Mozzarella Sticks
Recipe FAQ’s
Can I Add Some More Spice?
Add some sliced jalapeño’s as a topping along with the pepperoni. Add some crushed red pepper flakes or red cayenne pepper in with the other dried seasonings. Use shredded Pepper Jack cheese.
Can I Add Other Pizza Toppings?
Yes, add whatever favorite toppings you want! Chopped or sliced mushrooms, black olives, chopped bell peppers, or thinly sliced red onion are all great options. You can even add some cooked and crumbled bacon or cooked and crumbled ground Italian sausage.
Should I Use Pre-Shredded Cheese Or Shred Cheese Myself?
Freshly shredded cheese from a block of cheese, or fresh mozzarella cheese, is preferred; it melts better and smoother. You can use pre-shredded cheese if you want to, but the texture maybe different as its consistency in melting is different from freshly grated cheese.
What Are Some Changes I Can Make?
I like to add some pesto sauce in with the pizza sauce before spreading it over the chicken. Pesto + pizza sauce or marinara sauce is always a delicious mixture. You could even replace the pizza sauce with just pesto or Alfredo sauce.
