SEMI-HOMEMADE EASY SPAGHETTI SAUCE
These school weeknights are getting busy around here! I always rely on a few staple dinners that are quick & easy, and will get dinner on the table in a hurry. And they have to be kid-friendly, so that my really picky kid will actually eat it 🙂
This semi-homemade easy spaghetti sauce is one of those dinners. Not only is it so easy to make, it’s also a very inexpensive dinner, and the best part is that there is NO chopping involved!
That’s usually how I judge if a recipe is quick & easy, is if I have to get out a cutting board and chop stuff. None of that with today’s recipe.
I love homemade spaghetti sauce but I also love an easy spaghetti sauce that comes together quickly, with few ingredients but still tastes amazing.
You can also very easily turn spaghetti into a hearty and well-rounded dinner. Serve with some garlic bread and green salad on the side. I like to buy a bag of the salad mix and then add a chopped cucumber and grape tomatoes to it. My kids love those veggies so I add them into the salad.
How to make spaghetti sauce
You will need 1 lb of Italian sausage. You can use the mild, sweet, or hot Italian sausage. I usually use the sweet Italian sausage because my kids prefer it but I have also used the mild sausage. It has a slight kick to it, but nothing that prevents my kids from eating it.
Brown the ground Italian sausage in a skillet pan over medium high heat. Make sure to crumble it into small pieces as it cooks. Towards the end of the cook time you will add salt, dried basil, and garlic powder. Drain it and return to pan.
Add both cans of pasta sauce. The classic red tomato marinara sauce and some alfredo sauce. I prefer to use the Italian sausage & garlic pasta sauce and either the traditional alfredo sauce or the cheese alfredo sauce. Use a brand and a flavor that you love the taste of.
While the spaghetti sauce is simmering boil up some thin spaghetti noodles. Serve with some garlic bread and parmesan cheese for topping. Yum!
Tips for making spaghetti sauce
Use a pasta sauce brand and variety that you love. Anything goes! I normally use a Italian sausage & garlic pasta sauce along with traditional alfredo sauce.
The thin spaghetti noodles only need 6 minutes to cook and I like to simmer my spaghetti sauce longer than 6 minutes. I will usually let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes or so, and then start my pasta noodles. The flavor deepens and the sauce thickens up nicely if it simmers longer.
The best way to serve this is with parmesan cheese as garnish. I buy a bag of the pre-shredded parmesan cheese. You can also shred it yourself from a block, or use the grated parmesan cheese that comes in the green can.

- 1 lb ground Italian sausage (mild, hot, or sweet)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 jar (24 oz) Italian sausage pasta sauce (or any variety)
- 1 jar (24 oz) alfredo sauce (traditional or any variety)
- 1 box (1 lb) pasta of your choice (I use thin spaghetti)
In a skillet, over medium-high heat, brown and crumble the ground Italian sausage. About halfway through, add the salt, dried basil, and garlic powder. Continue cooking until no longer pink. Drain.
Add the pasta sauce and alfredo sauce into the ground sausage and stir together. Turn heat down to medium-low and let simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.
While sauce is simmering cook your pasta of choice according to package instructions.
Serve over pasta noodles and garnish with parmesan cheese.
This sauce can easily be changed and adapted to what you prefer. Add some finely diced onion in with the ground sausage or use fresh garlic instead.
I prefer to use the sweet Italian sausage or the mild sausage.
Italian sausage is already pre-seasoned so you'll need to add some additional seasonings if you use a different ground meat, like ground beef or ground turkey.
